Kano, Nigeria – Muazu Magaji Dawakin Tofa, a former commissioner for works in Kano and a controversial figure, ignited a firestorm on social media by lambasting Northern Governors for their purportedly fruitless expenditure exceeding 1 trillion Naira since May 29, 2023. Dawakin Tofa’s scathing remarks, made via his verified Facebook account, pointed to a glaring lack of tangible results despite substantial financial investments across the Northern region.

In his Facebook post, Dawakin Tofa called attention to Kano State’s expenditure under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, highlighting what he described as “useless spending.” He cited examples such as the allocation of N800 million for mass weddings, N6 billion for Ramadan feeding, N40.3 billion for road construction and flyovers, N500 million for painting flyovers, N5.32 billion for government house renovation, N3.6 billion for postgraduate scholarships abroad, and the demolition of buildings worth N226 billion.

Despite these significant allocations, Dawakin Tofa lamented the dire living conditions faced by the majority of Kano residents, including water shortages in both rural and urban areas, and inadequate access to clean water. He also criticized the state of primary and secondary education in Kano, suggesting that the government’s spending priorities were misplaced.

Dawakin Tofa’s critique underscores broader concerns about the effectiveness and accountability of government spending in Northern Nigeria. Many citizens have voiced frustration over the apparent disconnect between massive budget allocations and the persistent socio-economic challenges facing the region.

As Northern Governors face mounting scrutiny over their expenditure patterns, calls for greater transparency, accountability, and public participation in governance processes have grown louder. Citizens demand concrete actions and measurable outcomes that address pressing needs such as infrastructure development, access to education, healthcare, and essential services.

In response to Dawakin Tofa’s allegations, government officials and representatives of Northern states are expected to provide clarifications and defend their spending decisions. The controversy surrounding Northern Governors’ expenditure highlights the urgent need for robust oversight mechanisms and a renewed commitment to prioritizing initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to the people they serve.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has disbursed over N600 million to residents of Bulbula and Gayawa who were affected by the ongoing Erosion Control Project.

A statement released on Thursday by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said that the disbursement was organized by the Kano State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (Kano-ACReSAL), under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. The event took place at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

According to the statement, the project involves the construction of reinforced concrete channels, bioremediation buffers, and other robust erosion control infrastructure.

This initiative aims to reclaim degraded land and restore safety to the affected areas. It is being executed through a collaboration between the state and federal governments, with support from the World Bank.

The statement further elaborated that the project will also strengthen surveillance through the engagement of community vigilantes and the installation of solar streetlights to deter criminal activity that had previously thrived in the abandoned gully area.

In his address, Governor Yusuf stated:
“Today marks a significant step forward in our collective journey to restore dignity, security, and prosperity to the communities of Bulbula and Gayawa.”

He continued:
“I am deeply honored to be here to personally present compensation cheques to the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) under the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) for the Bulbula-Gayawa Erosion Control Project in Nasarawa and Ungogo Local Government Areas.”

The Governor urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds, emphasizing:
“Every cheque presented today is a message that the government of Abba Gida-Gida stands with its people, especially during times of hardship and displacement.”

“The compensation being disbursed today is based on thorough enumeration, community engagement, and due diligence. Our approach ensures that every affected citizen is recognized, documented, and fairly treated in accordance with global best practices,” he assured.

Governor Yusuf lamented that:
“The Bulbula-Gayawa erosion menace has brought untold hardship to many. It has claimed farmlands, damaged homes, displaced families, and turned once-thriving neighborhoods into unsafe zones.”

The Governor pledged his administration’s continued support throughout the project’s lifecycle, reiterating that no community would be left behind in the development process.

Governor Yusuf expressed his appreciation to the implementation team under the ACReSAL Project, traditional rulers, community representatives, and relevant stakeholders for their transparency, professionalism, and relentless efforts in ensuring the successful compensation exercise.

Some beneficiaries, Jibril Abdullahi Jibril and Fatima Haruna, expressed their gratitude to the state government for the intervention. They recalled years of advocating for the project, which had been unsuccessful until the present administration took action.

Vatican Elect Cardinal Robert Prevost as new pope

Published

Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected pope, the first time an American will lead the Roman Catholic Church. He chose the name Pope Leo XIV.

The 69-year-old new pontiff appeared at the balcony in St. Peter’s Basilica and said Peace be with all of you!”

He said he wanted his message of peace to “enter your hearts, reach your families and all people, wherever they are.”

He thanked his fellow cardinals for selecting him, and spoke in Italian, Spanish and Latin. Having spent years working in Peru, he thanked his former diocese in the South American country, “where a loyal people has shared its faith and has given a lot,” he said.

He also spoke warmly of the late Pope Francis and concluded by leading the crowd in prayer.

He appeared after white smoke streamed from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signaling the 133 cardinals inside had elected a new pope.

A roar erupted from the crowd when they saw the white smoke, which was shown on several large screens in St. Peter’s Square. Enormous bells of St. Peter’s Basilica began to ring, tolling the news that the Catholic Church has a new pope.

The vote came on the second day of the papal election process known as the conclave. Church experts had named other possible candidates and had not expected an American to win the papacy.

Rome has been brimming with excitement, as thousands gathered near the Via della Conciliazione to be present for the historic moment when the new pope is announced and presented to the world.

The cardinal electors then paid homage and pledged obedience to the new head of the church, and thanked God while the new pope was taken into a sacristy and fitted with papal attire.

Finally, the pronouncement was made in Latin — “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!” (“I bring you tidings of great joy: We have a pope!”) — and the new pope gave an apostolic blessing to throngs of faithful.
