Former Kano Commissioner Criticizes Northern Governors’ 1 Trillion Naira Spending Spree, Cites Lack of Tangible Results”

Kano, Nigeria – Muazu Magaji Dawakin Tofa, a former commissioner for works in Kano and a controversial figure, ignited a firestorm on social media by lambasting Northern Governors for their purportedly fruitless expenditure exceeding 1 trillion Naira since May 29, 2023. Dawakin Tofa’s scathing remarks, made via his verified Facebook account, pointed to a glaring lack of tangible results despite substantial financial investments across the Northern region.

In his Facebook post, Dawakin Tofa called attention to Kano State’s expenditure under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, highlighting what he described as “useless spending.” He cited examples such as the allocation of N800 million for mass weddings, N6 billion for Ramadan feeding, N40.3 billion for road construction and flyovers, N500 million for painting flyovers, N5.32 billion for government house renovation, N3.6 billion for postgraduate scholarships abroad, and the demolition of buildings worth N226 billion.

Despite these significant allocations, Dawakin Tofa lamented the dire living conditions faced by the majority of Kano residents, including water shortages in both rural and urban areas, and inadequate access to clean water. He also criticized the state of primary and secondary education in Kano, suggesting that the government’s spending priorities were misplaced.

Dawakin Tofa’s critique underscores broader concerns about the effectiveness and accountability of government spending in Northern Nigeria. Many citizens have voiced frustration over the apparent disconnect between massive budget allocations and the persistent socio-economic challenges facing the region.

As Northern Governors face mounting scrutiny over their expenditure patterns, calls for greater transparency, accountability, and public participation in governance processes have grown louder. Citizens demand concrete actions and measurable outcomes that address pressing needs such as infrastructure development, access to education, healthcare, and essential services.

In response to Dawakin Tofa’s allegations, government officials and representatives of Northern states are expected to provide clarifications and defend their spending decisions. The controversy surrounding Northern Governors’ expenditure highlights the urgent need for robust oversight mechanisms and a renewed commitment to prioritizing initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to the people they serve.

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has successfully concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop for journalists with special needs in Kano, aimed at equipping them with skills in digital journalism, artificial intelligence (AI), Canva, digital rights, and data privacy.

The training, held under CITAD’s Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) Digital Hub, commenced on Saturday and ended on Sunday, as part of the organisation’s drive to promote digital inclusion and ensure that no journalist is left behind in the evolving media landscape.

Declaring the workshop open, CITAD Executive Director, Malam Y.Z. Ya’u, represented by the organisation’s Communications Officer, Ali Sabo, explained that the initiative was designed to enhance the professional capabilities of journalists with disabilities.

“We want to ensure that every journalist — regardless of disability — has equal access to the tools and knowledge shaping modern journalism,” Sabo said. “This training is part of our commitment to digital inclusion. Knowledge is only useful when everyone can access it.”

Sabo, who also facilitated sessions on digital rights, data privacy, and protection, urged participants to prioritise the safety of both personal and professional information.

“Journalists operate in sensitive environments. Understanding digital safety is not optional; it is essential,” he emphasised.

Dr Bala Muhammad of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University Kano, encouraged participants to translate the skills acquired into their media practices.

“Training is meaningful only when it reflects in your work. Pay attention, apply what you learn, and become ambassadors of digital professionalism in your newsrooms,” he advised.

Other resource persons included Hamza Fagge, who spoke on digital inclusion, and Mubarak Shehu Dayyab, who trained participants on using Canva for journalism, AI in news production, and social media content creation.

Fagge highlighted the need for inclusive digital spaces, stating, “Technology should be a bridge, not a barrier. Everyone deserves access to the tools that shape our world.”

Dayyab urged participants to embrace new tools for storytelling. “Today’s journalist must blend creativity with technology to remain relevant,” he noted.

Participants expressed appreciation for the workshop, noting its impact on their skills and confidence.

Ummasalma Idris Ibrahim of Freedom Radio said, “The training has shown us that disability is not a limitation. With the right tools, we can compete and excel like anyone else.”

Bashir Ali Haruna of Vision FM added, “What CITAD has done is more than training — it is empowerment. I now understand how to protect myself online and produce richer content for my audience.”

A Nigerian Navy officer who recently clashed with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike escaped a suspected assassination attempt on Sunday, according to military sources.

Lt. A.M. Yarima was reportedly trailed by unidentified men dressed in black and travelling in two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates, the sources said.

The vehicles allegedly followed him from the NIPCO filling station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way at about 6:30 p.m.

A military source who spoke with Vanguard said the officer noticed the surveillance and carried out a “strategic manoeuvre” to evade the suspected attackers. The incident is now under investigation, and further details are being withheld to avoid compromising the process.

The alleged attempt comes days after Yarima was involved in a tense confrontation with Wike at a disputed land site in the Gaduwa District. The exchange, captured on video, drew widespread public attention and led the Presidency to halt a demolition exercise at the location.

Military veterans across the country have since criticised Wike for verbally insulting the officer during the encounter. The Coalition of Retired Veterans warned that its members would “occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister” if Yarima were punished.

“Military personnel swear allegiance to Nigeria, not to individuals,” the group’s spokesman, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, said, insisting that Wike must apologise for his comments, including calling the officer “a fool.”

Defence Minister Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has assured that no service member will be sanctioned for acting within the law.

“We will always protect officers and our armed forces personnel on lawful duty,” he said during a briefing ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

Veterans had earlier vowed to mobilise if any disciplinary action was taken against Yarima.

The people and government of Angola have paid tribute to Nigeria’s late former Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, in recognition of his historic contributions to Angola’s independence and Nigeria’s enduring commitment to African solidarity.

According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Saturday to honour and recognise the late former Head of State, Angola also honoured former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Minister of External Affairs, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, acknowledging Nigeria’s pivotal  support during Angola’s liberation struggle against Portuguese colonial rule in the mid-1970s.

The award ceremony took place in Angola’s capital, Luanda, as part of the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

According to the statement, during a time when Angola faced economic blockades and international isolation, Nigeria, under Muhammed’s leadership, was among the first nations to recognise the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) government, stressing that Nigeria also provided a financial lifeline of $17 million to help Angola rebuild and resist external pressures.

Speaking at the event, President of the Angola–Nigeria Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tangyalamba Veloso, lauded Muhammed’s courage and foresight.

She highlighted his bold stance in 1975, when he declared Angola’s government legitimate despite Cold War tensions and opposition from Western powers, positioning Nigeria as a moral voice for the continent.

He told the oil companies, if you pull out of Angola and don’t give them back their resources, you will also pull out from Nigeria and lose all your money. You won’t have Angola nor Nigeria to help your finances,” she said.

Her tribute emphasised that Muhammed’s actions not only provided immediate support but also shaped the course of Angola’s history.

“He was the first to provide financial assistance $17 million, and the first president to recognize Angola as an independent country,” Veloso said, drawing applause from attendees.

The ceremony served as both a celebration of Angola’s independence and a reminder of Nigeria’s historic leadership and solidarity across Africa.
