PDP Tells Tinubu to Seek Help with Insecurity or Resign

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the government’s decision to close schools in response to kidnappings, arguing that the move effectively surrenders to terrorists’ demands.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, stated during a Sunday press conference in Abuja that such a reaction rewards criminal behavior and cedes ground to fear.

“If the schools are closed, the goal of the terrorists would have been inadvertently achieved,” Ememobong said.

He continued, “develop a comprehensive plan to combat the issue, instead of resorting to a simplistic approach of closing schools in a bid to prevent further kidnappings and to score cheap political points.”

Ememobong said the government must prioritise the funding and implementation of the National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools, which he noted is anchored on community intelligence and rapid response systems capable of anticipating and tackling attacks.

According to him, ensuring safety in schools has become imperative because insecurity poses a major “disincentivisation for education in the country, especially in Northern Nigeria.”

He expressed the party’s concern that shutting down schools would worsen the already dire educational situation in the region, citing UNICEF data indicating that Northern Nigeria accounts for the majority of the country’s 18.3 million out-of-school children—10.2 million at the primary level and 8.1 million at the secondary level.

Ememobong said: “This data not only paints a grim picture but also mirrors the exact situation in Nigeria. The series of attacks and kidnappings in different states within a week is indicative of the alarming insecurity that has become the contemporary lived experience and new reality of Nigerians under the APC-led Bola Tinubu government.”

He criticised what he described as the federal authorities’ inadequate response to recent abductions.

“More troubling is the fact that when these unfortunate incidents happen, the administration’s response is usually lacklustre and unempathetic,” he said.
“For example, instead of the President visiting Kebbi and Niger States to meet and sympathise with the parents of the children in captivity and to address security personnel there, he merely directed the Minister of State for Defence to relocate to Kebbi.”

He continued: “A juxtaposition of the contingents sent to the US Congress and the G-20 meeting with Matawalle’s lone envoy exposes the levity with which the Presidency treats this matter. This reaction is most insensitive and dismissive of the gravity of the problem by the APC-led Federal Government.”

The PDP reiterated its position that safeguarding lives and property is the foremost responsibility of government. Ememobong said: “We again remind the President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the entire APC-led administration that the security of lives and property is the primary function of any government.

At any time a government is unwilling, unable, or incapable of executing this primary role, such a government must either ask for help locally or internationally or honourably resign, if it is sincere and responsible.”

In a new biography, former First Lady Aisha Buhari has revealed that late President Muhammadu Buhari began locking his bedroom door, preventing her from gaining access, after hearing rumors within Aso Rock that she intended to kill him.

This personal account is featured in the 600-page book, ‘From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari’, where Aisha Buhari details her experience managing her husband’s health challenges during his presidency.

She stated that the former president, trusting the gossip circulating within the presidential villa, altered some of his personal habits as a result.

The biography, which was authored by Charles Omole, director-general of the Institute for Police and Security Policy Research, was launched at the presidential villa in Abuja.

Many high-profile persons and political chieftains, including President Bola Tinubu, attended the launch.

In the book, Aisha said Buhari’s 2017 health crisis was not a mysterious ailment or the effect of poisoning, but began after a broken feeding routine and mismanaged nutritional habits.

The former first lady said she had long managed her husband’s meals and supplements at specific hours, adding that the regimen helped Buhari to maintain stability.

“According to Aisha Buhari, her husband’s 2017 health crisis did not originate as a mysterious ailment or a covert plot. It started, she says, with the loss of a routine; ‘my nutrition,’ she describes it, a pattern of meals and supplements she had long overseen in Kaduna before they moved into Aso Villa,” the book reads.

When they moved to the villa, she said she convened a meeting with close staff including Suhayb Rafindadi, the physician; Bashir Abubakar, the chief security officer; the housekeeper, and the DSS DG to explain the plan.

After some time, the plan was discontinued.

“When the Presidency’s machinery took over our private lives, I explained the plan: daily, at specific hours, cups and bowls with tailored vitamin powders and oil, a touch of protein here, a change to cereals there. Elderly bodies require gentle, consistent support,” Aisha was quoted as saying in the book.

“Then came the gossip and the fearmongering. They said I wanted to kill him.

“My husband believed them for a week or so,” she said, adding that the president began locking his room, changed small habits, and crucially, “meals were delayed or missed; the supplements were stopped”.

“For a year, he did not have lunch. They mismanaged his meals,” she added.

Aisha denied stories of plots to poison her husband, adding that Buhari’s health began deteriorating because of “loss of a routine, ‘my nutrition,’ was the genesis of the crisis”.
