Late Chief MKO Abiola and General Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, was prevented from becoming president because of what he described as “bad belle”.

Obasanjo who spoke at centenary celebrations of the Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday, said said “bad belle” did not allow the school produce another president.

According to the former military leader, without the moral virtues and sound education impacted on him by BBHS, he would not have become what he is today.

In his words “Today, there are distinguished old boys in all walks of life, i.e., private sector, academia, military and paramilitary, civil society, traditional rulership, etc. Such is the present President of Old Boys Association of BBHS, Prof. Kayode Oyesiku.

“I believe that I must not be too forgetful to leave out yours truly, the son of Obasanjo, a modest war-victorious General and former Military Head of State and former President of Nigeria. Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the first communication industry millionaire in Nigeria and the acclaimed winner of the 1993 Presidential election who was in a class by himself.

“If not for Nigerian bad belle, M.K.O. Abiola would have been President and with me as President, we would have needed one more old student of BBHS to be President for us to permanently locate it in BBHS after three times. And that is a challenge for up-and-coming generations of old boys.”

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called for a public parade of the suspects arrested in connection with the brutal killing of 16 Kano indigenes in Udene, Uromi Local Government Area of Edo State.

The Governor also reiterated the need for full compensation to the families of the victims as part of justice for the heinous act.

Governor Yusuf made this demand on Monday when he received Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who led a delegation to Kano to offer condolences over the tragic incident.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf insisted that the swift arrest of the perpetrators must be followed by a transparent process, including a public parade to assure Nigerians that justice is being served.

“We appreciate the prompt action taken so far, but justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. The people of Kano, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve to see those responsible for this massacre brought to justice publicly,” Governor Yusuf stated.

He further commended Governor Okpebholo for engaging with Hausa community leaders in Edo State to prevent escalation and for committing to compensating the bereaved families.

“The compensation promised is a commendable step, but it must be executed without delay to support the grieving families who have lost their breadwinners,” he added.

Governor Yusuf also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing security agencies to take immediate action and emphasized that such atrocities must never be repeated in any part of Nigeria.

Earlier, Governor Okpebholo, while expressing deep sorrow over the killings, assured that his administration would ensure that justice is served swiftly and fairly.

“I rushed to Uromi as soon as I got the news. I met with the Hausa community there, and we worked to ease tensions. I want to assure you that those responsible will face the full wrath of the law,” Governor Okpebholo said.

The Kano State Government maintains its stance that justice must be fully implemented to restore confidence among citizens and prevent further incidents of ethnic violence in the country.

Uromi killings: Edo gov meets Sen Barau, says 14 suspects to be taken to Abuja for further interrogation

Published

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has paid a condolence visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, over the killings of travellers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The governor was at the Maitama residence of the Deputy President of the Senate in Abuja on Monday.

A mob had intercepted the innocent travellers who were on their way to Kano State for Sallah celebrations, ransacked their vehicle and gruesomely murdered them on Thursday. The victims who were hunters are from Kano State.

The Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, said the governor extended his condolences to the Deputy President of the Senate, who is from Kano State, pledging that the state government will assist the families of the victims.

The Edo State governor disclosed that the 14 suspects arrested in connection with the killings of the innocent travellers are going to be taken to Abuja for further interrogation.

While assuring that the perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law, he described the killings of the innocent travellers as unfortunate and condemnable.

” It’s unfortunate that it happened in our state. We are here to say, to let you and other people know that we are not happy.
The president is doing something drastic about this. He’s not happy also. The IG has swung into action. The DIG CID is in charge. So far, they have arrested 14 suspects.

” So they are bringing them to Abuja for interrogation. We have also set up a committee to see that we take care of the families of the deceased,” he said.

Responding, the Deputy President of the Senate said the perpetrators of the act must be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.

” We cannot undo what has been done. But we all want – all Nigerians, what they are looking forward to is to make sure that these people are arrested and brought to justice. And you are doing well in that direction. And I’m also glad you’ve spoken about the fact that your government is ready to assist the families of those affected.

” I want you to continue to pursue the case so that all those who were involved in these barbaric actions are brought to justice. It’s a barbaric action, to say the facts.

” If they are brought to justice, it would serve as a deterrent to those who might want to do this in future. I know that people from other parts of the country have been staying with your people in Edo for centuries in a very conducive atmosphere. And this barbaric act has never happened. I’m sure, under your watch, this will not happen again.

” I thank you very much. You’ve told me now that you’ll meet the Kano State governor today. This is very good. Please continue what you are doing. Mr President also told us that you are doing very well in this direction, and we have seen it because, as I said, we have spoken several times on this matter in the last 72 hours,” he said.
