Kano approves Child Rights Act, Transmits Bill To Assembly For Passage

Kano state Executive Council has approved the acceptable version of the proposed bill on Child Rights (protection) Act 2010 which reflected the position of Shari’ah on each and every section of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 adopted by the federal government.

 

Recall that after its adoption by the federal government in 2003, the state government and other relevant stakeholders that included the Ulama, academics, Non-Governmental Organization, later drafted the 2010 act, which, however, could not be passed due to lack of political will and continuity in government.

The state commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who disclosed this at the end of the council meeting held at the Africa House, Government House, said the administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, due to his commitment to child welfare, after assenting to the bill on Free and Compulsory Education, develop a keen interest in seeing the passing of the CRA.

 

He said the approved bill when passed, seeks to protect the rights of the child and would be transmitted to the State House of Assembly for passage and subsequent assent to the governor.

 

Malam Garba said that other approvals by the council include the release of N29, 311, 647.24 million for the 2020/2021 vaccination exercise which has not been holding for three years as a result of the prevailing health risk and high economic loss affecting the pastoral community in the state.

 

The commissioner also announced that approval has been for the release of the sum of N274, 230, 000.00 million to the state darling team, Kano Pillars Football Club to facilitate smooth conduct of the year 2021 National Professional Football League.

 

In a statement by Muhammad Garba, the state commissioner for information said Other approvals include the sum of N1, 240, 637, 737.50 billion for the completion of rehabilitation of Ahmadu Bello Way, the sum of N212, 959, 665.00 for the reconstruction of Dangote female hostel of Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil as well as the sum of N245, 000, 000.00 million for the conduct of Mass Wedding Programme in the state.

Fubara’s Whereabouts Unknown As Military Moves Trucks Into Rivers Govt House

The movement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara was unknown on Tuesday night when the military moved trucks into Rivers Government House in Port Harcourt.

The trucks were placed within and outside the Government House on the first night of the State of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu declared emergency rule amid the attacks on oil installations in Rivers State.

Some militants groups had threatened to blow up pipelines if the Rivers House of Assembly impeach Fubara.

However, hours after the lawmakers served the governor with notice of alleged misconduct, the militants carried out their threat.

Breaking :President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers state,Removes Democratic Structures

The president made the announcement on Tuesday in a nationwide broadcast over the political crisis and instability in the state.

Tinubu said Siminalayi Fubara, governor of the state; his deputy, Ngozi Odu; and all members of the Rivers assembly are “hereby suspended for an initial period of six months”.

“Having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State and the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State having failed to make a request to me as President to issue this proclamation as required by section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, 18th March, 2025 and I so do,” the president said.

Tinubu meets with service chiefs in Aso Rock

President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a high-level meeting with the service chiefs at the State House.

Among those in attendance are Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff; Olufemi Oluyede, chief of army staff; Emmanuel Ogalla, chief of naval staff; Hassan Abubakar, chief of air staff; and Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police.

Also present are Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser; Oluwatosin Ajayi, director-general of the State Security Service; and Muhammed Muhammed, director-general of the National Intelligence Agency.
