Nigeria Bar Association Ungogo Branch Condemns Hate Speech by Politicians in Kano State

Published

on

In a strong condemnation of recent hate speech incidents in Kano State, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Ungogo Branch has expressed deep concern over the alarming trend of unguarded statements made by politicians that could potentially destabilize the state’s political environment.

The NBA Ungogo Branch has been troubled by the recent surge in inflammatory rhetoric within Kano’s political landscape. Video clips of speeches delivered by the Kano State Commissioner of Land and Physical Planning and the Special Adviser to the Kano State Government on Youth and Sports, which contained threats and derogatory remarks, went viral on social media platforms. In one instance, the Commissioner issued death threats against Election Petition Tribunal Judges in the state, while the Special Adviser launched an attack on the personality of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, HE Sen. Kashim Shettima.

The NBA Ungogo Branch has unequivocally condemned these reprehensible acts by the two political appointees. Such actions, according to the association, are not only disheartening but also unacceptable in Kano State’s political landscape.

The NBA Ungogo Branch firmly believes that such inflammatory statements can only serve to further divide the state and potentially lead to socio-political unrest.

In a commendable move, the Kano State Government, under the leadership of HE Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has taken swift disciplinary action by relieving the two political appointees of their duties. The NBA Ungogo Branch extends its profound appreciation to the state government for its decisive actions. By removing these individuals from their positions, the government has demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding lives, properties, and public peace in Kano State.

The NBA Ungogo Branch also expresses its unwavering support for the Election Petition Tribunal and the rule of law in general.

In closing, the Publicity Secretary of the NBA Ungogo Branch, Mustapha Ibrahim Zubair Esq., thanked all stakeholders for their commitment to maintaining peace and upholding the principles of justice and fairness in Kano State.

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been unwavering in his commitment to securing the release of the teenagers, vowing to pursue all legal avenues to ensure their freedom.

In a statement, issued by governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, governor Yusuf expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of human rights advocates, including renowned lawyer Femi Falana SAN, and others who fought tirelessly to secure the minors’ release.

“The Federal Government has today withdrawn the treason charges against the minors, who were primarily from Kano State.

“This is a victory for justice and human dignity,” said Barr. Suleiman Dantsoho, one of the human rights lawyers representing the teenagers.

He went on to praise Governor Yusuf for his dedication to the cause, noting that the Governor’s leadership and advocacy had been instrumental in ensuring the teenagers’ freedom.

“We commend Governor Abba Yusuf for his unwavering support and commitment to human rights and the dignity of his people,” Dantsoho added.

The teenagers are set to be formally handed over to Governor Yusuf by Vice President Kashim Shettima later today, before being flown back to Kano via Max Air.

This landmark decision underscores the importance of safeguarding the rights of individuals, especially minors, and demonstrates the power of legal advocacy in the face of injustice.
