Some farmers in Northwestern Nigeria, particularly in Kano, have expressed concerns about their participation in this year’s dry season farming due to the recent fuel subsidy removal.

These farmers, primarily involved in rice and maize cultivation, shared their apprehensions during interviews with a NIGERIAN TRACKER correspondent in Kano.

Hailing from the Marke village in Bunkure Local Government, they emphasized that the high cost of fuel might deter them from engaging in dry season farming.

Hamza Mato, a young farmer, questioned the practicality of purchasing fuel at 660 Naira per litre to power generators for irrigating their rice or maize fields. He explained that the constant need for irrigation would lead to significant financial losses.

Another farmer, Musa Yellow, expressed the hardship faced by village farmers due to the fuel subsidy removal. He noted that during the rainy season, the abundant natural water supply from the sky posed no limitations. However, the dry season presented a formidable challenge.

Kabiru Marke supported his colleagues’ concerns, highlighting that, as rural farmers, much of their dry season farmland remained unused until the moment repairs began on the river basins. These repairs often disrupted their farming activities.

Marke emphasized the difficulty of affording the high-priced fuel needed to operate their generators, further complicating their situation as many of them were responsible for their families’ well-being.

Speaker Kano Assembly Falgore

Kano State House of assembly has passed a law which repealed 4 Emirates created by former Governor of Kano state Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje .

According to an impeccable and credible source told NIGERIAN TRACKER that any time from now the state Governor will assent to the law.

Reports says that the Assembly repeale the Emirates Law on Thursday during its plenary session amidst tight security.

It is understood that the assembly is expected to submit the decision to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for assent.

There are speculations that the dissolution of the four Emirates was done to pave way for the return of deposed 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.

Already, the current Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayeo and his Bichi counterpart Nasiru Ado Bayero have travelled out of the state.

Recall that Mr Sanusi was dethroned in March 2020 by former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, following a protracted political dispute.

Mr Ganduje had then created the four new Emirates to reduce the influence of the Once powerful Kano Emirate.

All eyes are now on the modalities and process the State Government will make to pave way for the return of the 14th Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammad Sunusi Lamido Aminu Sunusi.

Only time will tell on this assertions and hope it will be of the developmental interest of the residents and the nation at large.

Parliamentarians from 12 countries, including Nigeria, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote D’ Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone and the Republic of Togo, are participating in the second extraordinary session of the parliament.

At the secondary school, Senator Barau explained the importance of the ECOWAS in integrating the subregion.

“We are here today for the members of the ECOWAS Parliament to know about our educational system and to meet our students, as well as for you, the students, to learn more about the ECOWAS Parliament.

“This school is like my school. I belong to this community. I was the first House of Representatives member of this federal constituency (Tarauni) in 1999.

” Therefore, I am donating uniforms to all the school’s students, one set for each student. I will send tailors to take your measurements for the new uniforms. I will also give a new Sharon vehicle for the school and N1 million to the teachers,” he said.

The sixth parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Parliament) at the 2024 second extraordinary session of the parliament holding in Kano, North West Nigeria, considered and adopted crucial parliamentary instruments to guide the progress and implementation of its mandate.

The instruments consist of the rules of procedure, the strategic plan and the 2024 work plan of the parliament.

Acting Speaker of the ECOWAS parliament and Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, in his speech at the session’s opening, stressed the importance of the protocols in facilitating the work of the parliament.

“This Extraordinary Session is unique on several counts. During this session, we are expected to hold deliberations and adopt three very important instruments which bear heavily on the progress and effective implementation of our mandate.

They are The Rules of Procedure of the Sixth Legislature, which was deferred from our inaugural session—the Strategic Plan of the Sixth Legislature and 2024 Annual Work Plan.

“You would agree with me that our Rules of Procedure are very important as they make us more efficient and serve as our guide, thereby reducing the chances of our actions and decisions being challenged for procedural deficiencies.

“The Strategic Plan, on the other hand, will serve as a crucial and indispensable tool in ensuring that our programs and activities are directly linked with the overall strategic institutional objectives of ECOWAS, while our Work Plan will set the agenda for our engagements this year, he said.

The adoption of these instruments now sets the stage for the full commencement of parliamentary activities by the community parliament.
