Analysis: Stalemate as Two Emirs Continue to Hold Court: How Emir Sanusi Suffers Bad PR

Published

on

With the deposition of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero on May 23, 2024, by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the reinstatement of Muhammad Sanusi II, the attention of Kano indigenes has been divided between Emir Sanusi II and Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, who has refused to leave Kano and continues to claim the emirship despite his deposition by the Kano State Government.

On the side of Emir Muhammad Sanusi II, since his return to Gidan Rumfa, the reinstated Emir has continued to hold court unabated, with visitors, especially Kwankwasiyya politicians, daily helping to douse tension in the emirate.

On the part of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, he continues to hold court at the Nassarawa mini palace, where his grandfathers have been buried. Politicians, especially from the APC, are daily visiting the palace to console him and still address him as the Emir of Kano.

The stalemate, which is yet to be cleared by the courts, has put Kano and neighboring states in limbo regarding who is the rightful claimant to the Kano throne of over one thousand years.

Even during the Eid al-Adha celebrations, when Emir Sanusi led prayers at the Kofar Mata Eid ground inside the Alhaji Ahmadu Tijjani Jumuat Mosque, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero also held prayers at the Nassarawa palace with politicians, mostly from the APC, in attendance. Photographs have even shown the APC state chairman in attendance.

Checks by NIGERIAN TRACKER reveal that Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero is still holding court daily at the Nassarawa mini palace, with a heavy presence of security personnel surrounding the palace.

While Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero’s palace is still issuing controversial statements that Nigerian newspapers are picking up for headlines, Emir Sanusi’s side is battling with bad PR from Nigerian journalists.

Some sources say the reason why Emir Sanusi’s palace is struggling with bad PR is that they refuse to entrust it to competent hands, relying instead on glorified political praise singers and those who cannot effectively manage the crisis for the reinstated Emir Sanusi II.

Malam Muhammad Tijjani, chairman of the Dorayi security committee, explained that they discussed the insecurity menace extensively and developed a framework to address it.

Tijjani expressed concern that most thugs terrorizing the communities are under 35, and instead of being positive ambassadors, they cause trouble.

He noted that responsible individuals now hesitate to marry their daughters due to the thuggery acts, which threaten the future of their children, especially girls.

He cited an instance where a groom’s relatives refused to attend a wedding in Dorayi until the location was changed.

The ward head of Dorayi Karama, represented by Umar Shehu, pledged traditional rulers’ support for peace efforts.

He condemned politicians who secure bail for arrested thugs, allowing them to celebrate their release.

Dr. Abdullahi Idris Danfodiyo, a resident, highlighted the lack of unity and assistance for injured community members, leading to a decline in participation.

He welcomed the initiative to sanitize the area and deal with the culprits to restore the community’s reputation. He urged the new police commissioner, Salman Dogo, to reject bail requests for thugs caught in the act.
