WAMAC Town Hall Meeting Promotes Anti-Corruption Measures in Enugu State

Enugu, Enugu State – On September 9th, 2023, the Wadata Media and Advocacy Centre (WAMAC), in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation, convened a significant Town Hall Meeting with a pivotal theme: “ACCOUNTABILITY ISSUES IN THE PAYMENT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT PENSIONERS IN ENUGU STATE.” Held at the prestigious BON PLATINUM HOTEL in Enugu, Enugu State, this event brought together a diverse array of stakeholders committed to amplifying the fight against corruption.

Participants in this influential gathering hailed from various sectors, including the media, civil society organizations, people with disabilities (PWDs), community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), pensioners’ associations, labor leaders, and the Honorable Commissioner of Information, Enugu State.

The Town Hall Meeting culminated in a series of vital resolutions aimed at accelerating the fight against corruption through enhanced community participation. These resolutions are outlined as follows:

Addressing Governance-Governed Disconnect: The meeting recognized the prevailing mistrust and lack of accountability in pension administration within Enugu State and identified the need to bridge the gap between the government and the governed.

Active Stakeholder Engagement: Participants called for the active involvement of stakeholders to ensure the timely payment of pensioner entitlements and arrears, commending the Enugu State government for restoring hope to local government pensioners.

Combatting Transactional Corruption: The Town Hall Meeting identified transactional corruption as a significant challenge in pension administration due to a lack of transparency and accountability tracking processes.

Prompt Remittance: Challenges faced by pensioners in other parastatals were acknowledged, and attendees urged local government chairmen to promptly remit funds to the Local Government Pension Board for the timely payment of pensioners and arrears.

Support for Anti-Corruption Agencies: Participants advocated for the continued enforcement of mandates by anti-corruption agencies, EFCC and ICPC, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and enforcement.

Commendation for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs): The meeting commended CSOs for their dedication and advocacy in the fight against corruption, while urging governments to ensure pensioners receive their entitlements promptly.

Addressing Social and Electronic Crimes: Concerns were raised about social crimes, including cybercrimes and human trafficking, which were deemed detrimental to development. Participants called for social inclusion for PWDs and the implementation of gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) measures.

Pension Scheme Review: The Town Hall Meeting applauded the Enugu State government’s establishment of a committee comprising pension administration stakeholders and labor leaders to review the Pension Scheme with a view to adopting the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Acknowledgment: The meeting expressed gratitude to DREAM FM Radio, Enugu, and other media organizations, as well as Wadata Media and Advocacy Centre (WAMAC) and the MacArthur Foundation, for their unwavering efforts in the fight against corruption.

Supreme Court Nullifies Turaki-Led PDP Ibadan Convention

The Supreme Court has nullified the national convention held by the Turaki-Led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.

In a split judgment delivered on Thursday, three of the five justices of the apex court ruled that the appeal brought before it by the faction led by Tanimu Turaki lacked merit.

Delivering the lead majority judgment, Justice Stephen Adah held that the appellants acted in violation of a subsisting order of the Federal High Court which restrained them from proceeding with the planned convention.

The court consequently invalidated the convention conducted in Ibadan.

Tinubu Removes NMDPRA Boss, Nominates Rabiu Umar as Replacement

President Bola Tinubu has approved the removal of the Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Mr Saidu Mohammed.

He has also nominated Mr Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new Chief Executive of the agency, subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The announcement was contained in a State House press release issued on Wednesay by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the removal of Mr Saidu Mohammed as the Authority Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), in the public interest,” Onanuga said.

According to the statement, the decision was taken in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and is aimed at strengthening regulatory effectiveness in the midstream and downstream petroleum sector, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Umar is a seasoned executive with over 25 years of experience across the energy, manufacturing and infrastructure sectors. He holds a degree in Accounting from Bayero University and is also an alumnus of Harvard Business School.

Pending Senate confirmation of the nominee, the most senior official in the NMDPRA will oversee the affairs of the authority in an acting capacity.

The Presidency thanked the outgoing chief executive for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours, while reiterating its commitment to appointing competent leadership in key regulatory institutions.

“The President remains committed to ensuring capable leadership in key regulatory institutions to advance energy security, sector reform, and sustainable economic growth,” the statement added.

The change in leadership at the NMDPRA followed the exit of its pioneer Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, who stepped aside in December 2025.

He was subsequently replaced by Saidu Mohammed, who assumed office as Authority Chief Executive of the NMDPRA.

Workers’ Day: FG Declares Friday, May 1 Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Friday a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers Day.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this on behalf of the Federal Government.

A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani said the minister congratulated workers across the country on this year’s celebration.

“The Minister commended Nigerian workers for their hard work and dedication to national development. He noted that their efforts are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity.

“He encouraged workers to embrace patriotism, productivity, and dedication to their duties. These qualities are crucial for sustainable development.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to supporting the welfare and security of all workers and creating a favorable environment for economic growth.
