Naming A Successor: Governor Ganduje In A Fix

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje

As the governorship Primaries for All Progressives Congress in Kano is fast approaching, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is in a fix as efforts to name his successor among several contenders reach its crescendo.

With the return of Democracy in 1999 majority of second term governors put their weight behind a candidate they wish he takes over from where they stopped.

The Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress ,a majority ruling party among the Nigeria’s 36 states slated May 17 for its governorship Primaries, the governor is yet to name a successor that will fill the APC governorship form from the side of government so that he will have an easy sail during the primary election.

Since last year when Kano powerful first lady Professor Hafsa Abdullahi Umar Ganduje put a nod on the state commissioner for local government Murtala Sule Garo, speculations were rife within the political circle that Governor Ganduje is also more disposed towards Murtala’s Garo’s candidature.

The aspirants seeking for Governorship ticket of the APC are powerful political blocks who supported Governor Ganduje to actualize his second term bid but some of them are ready to revolt against his choice for APC governorship candidate.

A source close to critical stakeholders told NIGERIAN TRACKER that Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is more disposed to the candidature of a retired NNPC director Barrister Inuwa Ibrahim Waya, while Murtala Sule Garo should deputise for him in case he emerge as Ganduje’s candidate for APC Governorship primaries.

Another source noted that former Kano speaker and now a member of the house of representatives representing Rano,Kibiya and Bunkure federal constituency Kabiru Alhasan Rurum is ready and his camp to leave the APC if Governor Ganduje decided to field Murtala Sule Garo or Inuwa Ibrahim Waya for the APC ticket.

As the dilemma rages on if critical party stakeholders refuse to support Barrister Inuwa waya’s candidature the Governor may finally settle for his silent Deputy Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna to fly the party’s flag and merge him with Murtala Sule Garo.

But sources and political pundits say Governor Ganduje is more disposed to Barrister Inuwa Waya due to their closeness and ties but most of the political stakeholders in APC within the 44 local governments preferred Murtala Sule Garo to pick the APC ticket with the support of Governor Ganduje.

But some of the odds against Murtala Garo is lack of exposure and his alleged tearing of election results during collation at Nassarawa local government which led to the declaration of inconclusive governorship in 2019.

Murtala Garo can not also speak fluently but most former Kano Governors from civilian extraction to Governor Ganduje are good English speakers which redeem the image of Kano anywhere in the world this is also where Inuwa Waya have edge over him.

A source told NIGERIAN TRACKER that if Governor Ganduje finally picks Barrister Inuwa Waya he wIll face a serious revolt from the APC political circle because to them Waya is new to the political terrain and he can not just come over night and overthrow grassroot politicians like Murtala Sule Garo whom they prefer to pick the APC ticket.

Murtala Sule Garo’s edge over Inuwa Waya is his support from the grass root while the odds against him is his youthfulness while Barrister Inuwa Waya according to critical APC stakeholders is a late comer into the race.

Western educated elites are also backing the candidature of Barrister Waya including most of Governor Ganduje’s political allies from 1999 to date.

Some sources also told this news paper that Mr Waya want to become Governor to contribute his quota to the development of Kano and the resources of the state utilized for public good.

Gov. Gida-Gida and Ganduje: The Firing of Unwarranted Political Salvos-Adamu Aminu

Former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Successor Abba Kabir Yusuf

By Adamu Aminu.

It is extremely disheartening to see how recently our two elder statesmen, the Kano state Governor, His Excellency, Abba Kabir Yusif, politically known as Abba Gida-Gida, and his immediate predecessor, the ex-Kano and present APC National chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, are busy exchanging salvos directly at each other.

The exchanges of verbal brawls through their spokesmen emanated shortly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusif inaugurated two judicial commissions of inquiry to investigate cases of misappropriation of public property, political violence, and missing persons from 2015 to 2019 to 2023.

It was unfortunate; all the accusations and counter-accusations from both sides were riddled with harsh and demeaning words, deemed unrepeatable and unworthy to come from our respected leaders who are beating chests of leading Kano, the state that has reached the zenith of political maturity in the whole nation.

I was automatically dumbfounded by how the exchanged salvos and political sarcasm were randomly so directed at each other, without revisiting the fact that history never lies; someday, posterity will judge them.

This comes at a time when the warring parties should set aside their differences and make Kano their concern and priority, but they resorted to opening the doors of all blackmailing arsenals at their disposal, overtly directed at each other, without knowing that their utterances and accusations are doing more harm than good to Kano state in general.

This came at a time when our counterpart States in the South, like Lagos, Rivers, and others, have already set politics aside and deeply engaged in the execution of developmental projects for their people, but Kano, a state of whole-tenure politics, is dragging feet towards the fulfillment of promises during electioneering campaigns.

At this time when most Kano industries are not functional, there is no portable water, unemployment, poverty, hunger, and thuggery clogging the wheels of Kano’s economic development, instead, they resorted to engaged in trading bitter words and pointing accusing fingers at themselves.

I think it’s time for our Excellency, the state governor Abba Kabir Yusif, and his predecessor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to wake up from their slumbers and stop demeaning themselves politically.

Trading accusations of one’s incompetence, docility, and another’s accusation of land grabbing and rat-like behavior is not the utmost priority for Kano populace.

It’s time to stop deceiving ourselves with the longstanding Kano praise “Kano Tumbin Giwa, Ko dame Kazo An Fika,” which means Kano, the melting pot, whatever you came along with, you’re far left behind. Kano state in this modern era deserves to be far from where it is now.

I do hope and pray that Governor Abba and his predecessor Ganduje make Kano and Kanawas their utmost priority. They are our role models, exchanging incendiary remarks with each other will show that politics isn’t only a dirty game, it’s a dirty war of raining curses and abuses.

They should know that someday around this time, they will be no more; only their legacies will make them immortal in the memory of Kano populace.
