The veteran journalist stated that one of the greatest challenges faced by Kano is the language of criticism used by some youth through the media. He lamented that Kano has developed a reputation for disrespectful discourse, noting that neighboring states are ashamed of what is happening in Kano.

He reminded the gathering to follow the code of ethics by being reliable and dependable, releasing information aligned with societal growth and development. He urged online media practitioners to avoid sensationalism and exaggeration, operate within societal norms, and ensure every piece of information is verified before dissemination.

In his address, the Kano State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, expressed his long-standing support for journalism and affirmed his belief in the nobility of the profession. He reiterated his determination to uphold these values.

Nigeria Tracker reports that Comrade Ibrahim Waiya stated that April 27th is a historic day with the inauguration of the online media chapel.

“We support this process and aim to bring reforms to the information sector. What is happening in the media space is quite unfortunate, and we cannot change it unless we bring critical stakeholders together. We do not want Kano to be left behind in this process.”

The chapel is open for all online practitioners to register, and unity is one of its strongest pillars. In this direction, all necessary support will be provided.

On his part, the newly inaugurated chairman of the Kano Online Media Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo of Independent Post, expressed his gratitude and commitment in his acceptance speech:

He said the formation of the Kano Online Media Chapel is a bold recognition of the transformative role digital platforms now play in shaping public opinion, holding power accountable, and amplifying the voices of the people. We are not here to compete with traditional media—we are here to complement, innovate, and lead the way in responsible, ethical, and impactful journalism in the digital age.

Dangambo said as your chairnan I do not take this responsibility lightly. I am committed to building a chapel that upholds professionalism, promotes unity among practitioners, and protects the interests of our members. Together, we will pursue opportunities for capacity building and partnerships that empower our members to thrive in this fast-evolving media landscape.

He said he will strive to earn the trust of the public, ensuring that the content we produce upholds the highest standards of truth, fairness, and integrity. As online journalists, we have a duty not only to inform but to inspire progress and development in our society.

‘To the honorable Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your support in realizing our dream for this chapel.”

The Anambra State Government has commenced a probe of civil servants accused of reporting late to duty and absenteeism in the state public service.

Some of the affected workers appeared before the Special Disciplinary Committee on Violation of Public Service Rules, following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s unscheduled visit to the State Secretariat in March, where it was discovered that over 90 per cent of the workforce were absent from their duty posts.

The committee, constituted in line with the Public Service Rules 2021, sat at the Office of the Head of Service, State Secretariat Complex, Awka, on Friday, and examined several workers over alleged lateness and absenteeism.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chairperson of the panel and Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, Nkiru Nwankwo, said lateness and absenteeism violate public service rules and amount to a breach of employment terms.

She warned that such offences are punishable under the rules, stressing that the current administration is committed to repositioning the public service for efficiency and effectiveness.

“This exercise is set up to probe lateness and absenteeism, which violate public service rules and constitute a breach of contract of employment. Workers should have a change of attitude toward work,” she said.

Nwankwo advised workers with genuine reasons for absence or lateness to follow due process by formally notifying appropriate authorities in writing and in good time.
