KUST, Al-Istiqama University Partner to Strengthen Linkages, Bridge Manpower Gap

Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil, yesterday pledged to strengthen partnership and scholarship with Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila.

Vice-Chancellor, KUST, Professor Shehu Alhaji Musa gave the assurance when he received the management of the new private university, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Salisu Shehu on a courtesy call to Wudil.

According to Professor Shehu, KUST is prepared to support the young university in the area of academic development through staff exchange and support programs as well as manpower capacity building.

The Vice-Chancellor reminded us that KUST has the obligation as a sister university to render all necessary technical support and lineage to Al-Istiqama because of the neighborliness of the two sister citadels of learning.

He had raised concern over the wide gap between the Southern and Northern parts of the country, especially in the areas of accessibility to tertiary education, largely due to acute shortage and poor investment in the private universities in the North.

The VC who applauded the foresight and courage of the former senior special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, on legislative matters, Dr. Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, founder of Al-Istiqama university, Kano, reiterated readiness to build a sustainable relationship with the university.

” Let me assure you that KUST is ready to support Al-Istiqama in all areas of interest that could build sustainable development and academic excellence. We are ready to sign an agreement with you for staff and program exchange perhaps inform of part-time, leave without pay, sabbatical, and other related.

” We would not hesitate because we consider it an an obligation to support you in research proposals, conferences, seminars, manpower support, and staff training. If you are also looking in the direction of postgraduate training for your staff, KUST has 58 postgraduate programs to build your manpower.

” We started in two academic programs and 91 students in 2001, today, I’m pleading to inform you that KUST has 20, 836 students running 58 postgraduate and 47 undergraduate programs. All our academic Programs have 100 percent accreditation”. Professor Shehu noted.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Al-Istiqama university, Professor Salisu had disclosed that the newly licensed private university commenced full academic session in October 2021 with over 300 undergraduate students and about 119 enrollees of the IJMB program, all accommodated in the university’s hostels.

Professor Salisu said Al-Istiqama is looking forward to joint conferences, seminar, and workshops to build academic and community service.

“As sister university, we share the same golds that are why we decided to seek partnership and collaboration in several areas of interest. We are here for good neighborliness as the closest neighbor. We feel and believed being neighbors alone is a good opportunity we must not take for granted.

” As a young citadel of learning, we are struggling to grow, and lending the rope through a senior university is more than necessary. We are more concerned in the area of staff training and development, research development, joint conferences, seminar, workshop, and conferences”. VC Al-Istiqama said.

Tragedy in Kano: Woman k!lls husband 9 days after wedding

A newlywed woman, Saudat Jibrin Adam, has been arrested for allegedly kill!ng her husband, Salisu Idris Ibrahim, just nine days after their wedding in the Farawa community of Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State.

The tragic incident, which occurred late Monday night, has shocked residents of the area.

According to eyewitnesses, Saudat allegedly asked her husband to close his eyes for a “surprise” before fatally slitti!ng his throat with a knife.

A neighbour, Dini Mada, who was one of the first to arrive at the scene, disclosed that Salisu named his wife as the attacker before succumbing to his injuries at the hospital.

“I asked him who did this to you, and he said, ‘Dini, it’s my wife. She stabbed me in the neck in the parlour.

“She told him to close my eyes for a surprise, not knowing she had hidden a knife,” Dini recalled.

He added that Salisu’s mother, whose home is attached to the couple’s residence, alerted him moments after hearing a disturbance.

“She thought it was an external attack, but we found Salisu bleeding with his throat slit.”

The suspect reportedly locked herself in a bedroom after the attack and was discovered by police during a search of the premises.

“She was on the phone when police entered and arrested her.

“We didn’t even know she was still in the house,” Dini added.

Sources close to the deceased claimed that the couple had unresolved marital issues.

Despite displaying affection during their courtship, the suspect allegedly refused to consummate the marriage and frequently declined to cook for her husband.

“That night, Salisu bought gurasa and meat for dinner because she again refused to cook,” one friend said.

Neighbours described the suspect as appearing “normal” and often accompanying her husband to visit family nearby, which made the attack even more shocking.

Family members confirmed that Salisu was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

His brother, Tanimu Idris, said he has been buried according to Islamic rites.

As of the time of this report, the Kano State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement.

Spokesperson SP Abdullahi Kiyawa said the command is investigating the matter.

Group distributes cash, agro-inputs to indigents in Nangere

A group under the auspices Rural Health Mission Nigerian, has distributed cash assistance to and agro-inputs to over 130 indigents in Nangere local government of Yobe state as part of the group’s citizens development initiative move to encourage self-reliance among communities.

Speaking during the venet, team lead of the group Muhammad Ahmad Saddiq stated that the group with head office in Gombe State is in Yobe state to render assistance and also to encourage people to self reliant.

He added that those that benefited from the support included 50 pregnant women that were given N40,000 each and maternity delivery kits were also given to them free adding that 15 people with special needs had received N50,000 each.

He further revealed that 15 elderly people were also given N50,000 each as part of the group’s assistance..

Similarly, the royal father of the day during the event that took place at Sabon Garin Nangere., His Royal Highness, the Emir of Tikau, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Ibn Grema while presiding over the distribution of the farm input to 35 farmer surged all beneficiaries to make good use of what they have received. He also commended the group for finding it worthy to assist the indigents in the area. The inputs distributed include fertilizer, spraying machines, liquid fertilizer, millet seeds, sorghum, and pest control among others.

EU Delegation Pays Courtesy Visit to Sultan of Sokoto, Expresses Commitment to Humanitarian Initiatives

A delegation of European Union (EU) representatives, led by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Gautier Mignot, paid a courtesy visit to His Eminence, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar at his palace in Sokoto. The visit was aimed at fostering diplomatic ties and introducing the EU team to one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional institutions.

Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Mignot emphasized the importance of engaging with esteemed leaders and institutions in Nigeria, stating, *”We are here to introduce ourselves to one of the most respected traditional institutions in the country.”* He expressed the EU’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with local communities through humanitarian and developmental programs.

One of the key highlights of the visit was the delegation’s announcement of a new EU-backed initiative targeted at supporting vulnerable children and disadvantaged individuals in Nigeria. Ambassador Mignot elaborated on the program’s focus, saying, “Our mission here includes the launch of a program specifically designed to provide aid to children and the less privileged, with a particular focus on Sokoto, the seat of the caliphate.”* The initiative aims to enhance welfare services and promote social development in the region.

The EU ambassador also reassured the Sultan of the delegation’s dedication to ensuring the success of its mission, pledging unwavering support and cooperation. “We are committed to working closely with relevant stakeholders to make this program a success,” he stated.

In his response, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar warmly welcomed the EU team, acknowledging the significance of their visit. He expressed his willingness to support their humanitarian objectives, stating, *”We fully appreciate this gesture and assure you of our unflinching support in realizing these noble goals.”* The Sultan further emphasized the need for collaboration among all societal groups to achieve maximum success, regardless of religious or ethnic backgrounds.

The visit also saw the presence of several esteemed council members accompanying the Sultan, including Wazirin Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu; Magajin Rafi, Barrister Rilwanu Bello; Galadiman Gari, Alhaji Aliyu Attahiru Galadanci; and Sa’in Kilgori, District Head of Kilgori, Alhaji Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori. Also in attendance were the Council Secretary, Damburan Alhaji Sa’idu Maccido, and the Director of Personnel Management of the Council, Wambai Ahmed Abdulkadir, among others.

The meeting underscored the significance of international partnerships in driving humanitarian efforts and fostering development within Nigeria. The EU delegation, alongside local authorities, expressed optimism that the newly launched initiative would yield substantial benefits for vulnerable communities in Sokoto and beyond.
