As the 10th edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy 2025 concluded in Kano, Governor’s College attained the 1st position, earning the right to represent Kano State at the upcoming North West National Quiz Competition.

This was contained in a statement issued by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam.

According to Ibrahim Adam, the competition, organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) under the supervision of the National Assembly, Abuja, is aimed at increasing the knowledge of the nation’s youth about the role of the legislative organ in promoting national democracy.

Thematic areas covered by the quiz competition included legislative oversight and accountability, legislative practice and procedures, National Assembly structure, conduct and performance, as well as constitution and governance, among others.

The competition involved six secondary schools, with two schools selected from each of the three senatorial zones of the state. The schools included Governor’s College, Government Girls Secondary School Kadawa, Science College Dawakin Tofa, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo, Girls Science and Technical College Sumaila, and Government Secondary School Rano.

Declaring the competition open at the Kano State Library Board, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq Madobi, represented by the Assistant Chief Legislative Officer, Umar Abdulganiyu, emphasized that the House is committed to supporting such programmes aimed at educating young students about the activities of the legislative organ.

Suleiman Mukhtar disclosed that, as tradition, any participating school that emerges winner of the competition would be invited to the Honourable House for further encouragement and support to face the national competition.

He explained that the House welcomes any school that intends to visit the Honourable Assembly for an excursion to observe how legislative activities are performed.

“Our door will remain open for our students to gain full knowledge about the best practices of our democracy and other legislative procedures so that they can be in a position to assist in promoting the system one day,” he stated.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, represented by the Director of Educational Support Services, Hajiya Halima Sadiya Tukur, appreciated the leadership and members of the National Assembly for prioritizing civic education and youth engagement on legislative matters.

He noted that the event is beyond a quiz competition but a gathering that celebrates knowledge, inspires young minds, and lays a solid foundation for more informed and participatory citizens.

“My dear students, your presence here signifies your dedication to learning about the pillars of our democracy and rule of law, legislative process, constitutional governance, and civic responsibility. These are not topics for academic enquiry alone; they are the foundation upon which our nation stands,” Makoda noted.

Speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Library Board, Dr. Kabiru Ado Zakirai, thanked the State and National Assembly for partnering with the Institute to bring the programme to the Board.

Announcing the winners, the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Professor Abubakar O. Suleiman, represented by the Programme State Coordinator, Aliyu Abdullahi, explained that Governor’s College won first position, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo came second, while Government Secondary School Rano secured third position.

Prof. Abubakar recalled that the first edition of the competition was held in 2016, with participating schools drawn strictly from within the Federal Capital Territory.

“The competition continued to be an annual event after the directive by the former Governing Council of the Institute, headed by the Senate President and Speaker of the National House of Representatives, to expand the programme to all parts of the country. This 10th edition is the fourth time the competition is being held at the national level,” the DG said.

At the end of the programme, certificates of attendance were presented to the participating schools, and prizes were awarded to the winners by the Institute.

Ibrahim Adam noted that Governor’s College was established and equipped during the second tenure of Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s administration in 2011.

With the swearing-in of Governor Yusuf in May 2023, the Governor revisited the college’s dwindling infrastructure and restored its glory, hence its present achievement.

The statement further noted that Governor Yusuf thanked the entire people of Kano State for the cooperation and support they are rendering to the administration in order to fulfill its campaign promises, especially in education.
