Ramadan is a time of worship that brings changes in driving behavior due to fatigue, dehydration, and increased traffic congestion, particularly during Iftar and Taraweeh prayers.

Kano State Government Welcomes Court of Appeal Judgment on Emirate Council Dispute

The Kano State Government has expressed profound satisfaction with the recent judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, regarding the Emirate Council matter involving His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II and other parties. This was announced during a press conference jointly addressed by the Hon. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Hon. Commissioner for Information, Kano State, on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Kano.

“On behalf of the Kano State Government, we express our profound satisfaction with the Judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, regarding the Emirate Council matter involving His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II and other parties,” stated the Hon. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice.

The verdict overturns earlier decisions by the Federal High Court and validates the government’s lawful actions regarding chieftaincy appointments and reforms in the state’s traditional institutions. “This ruling reaffirms the government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and adherence to due process in our efforts to modernize traditional structures while preserving the cultural heritage of Kano State,” added the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The judgment further clarifies the rightful jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, underscoring the constitutional boundaries of the courts in such affairs. “The decision by the appellate court to void previous judgments that questioned the state’s lawful appointments underscores the correctness of our actions and strengthens our resolve to continue reforms for equitable representation and inclusive governance,” emphasized the Hon. Commissioner for Information.

For the avoidance of doubt, all decisions, pronouncements, and orders made by the Federal High Court Kano have been quashed and set aside by the Court of Appeal. “Furthermore, the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly relating to Emirates and all actions taken by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State pursuant to that law have been fully upheld and legalized by the Court of Appeal,” the Hon. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice clarified.

Governor Yusuf set to disburse N3bn to flood victims

Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has completed arrangements to flag off distribution of three billion naira (N3b) to victims of flood in last rainy season in the affected areas.

Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this while declaring opened the 23rd State Executive Council Meeting held at Kano Government House today.

A statement issued by Governor’s spokesperson Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Wednesday said, Governor Yusuf revealed that the amount was donated by the Federal Government to the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory as intervention for the 2024 flood disaster.

The governor further revealed that the money was remitted to the state treasury few months ago in preparation for onward distribution the the affected victims.

He added that the administration kept the money appropriately to identify the real victims who will benefit from the gesture of the Federal Government and ensure produnce, accountability and responsiveness in the process.

“Now that we are ready, we have all the lists of the victims, we know how much each victim will collect, so the distribution will commence,” the governor assured.

He said already a main and sub committees for the distribution of the donation were set up and would go accross the 44 local government areas to disburse amount to real victims. Gov. Yusuf affirmed

It could be recalled that National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) with support from Intentional donor organisations have tracked the areas and people affected by the flood in Kano state.
