Kano Assembly Confirms Complaint of Border Encroachment by Bauchi Lawmaker
By Salisu Baso
The Kano State House of Assembly Committee on Land has received a complaint from the residents of Dariya village in Tudun Wada Local Government Area and Gomo village in Sumaila Local Government Area, both in Kano State.
The two Kano communities, bordering Bauchi State’s Burra Local Government Area, lodged the complaint with the Kano State House of Assembly, accusing a Bauchi lawmaker representing Burra of encroaching on their lands.
Hafizu Gambo, chairman of the House Committee on Land Matters, who represents Bunkure, along with other committee members, visited the affected communities as part of their oversight function.
Following the visit, the committee, led by Gambo, confirmed the residents’ claims of land encroachment by the Bauchi Assembly member. Gambo assured the communities that efforts would be made to reclaim the encroached lands for Kano State.
He expressed dismay that a Bauchi lawmaker, who should be well aware of legal boundaries, had removed the demarcation markers (drums) that outline the state borders.
The Kano Assembly members explained that their visit was to conduct oversight at the border communities of Dariya in Tudun Wada and Gomo in Sumaila, which lie between Tudun Wada and Burra.
Kano State Surveyor General Usman Dambatta also confirmed the encroachment and vowed to follow up on the issue.

By Asile Abel, Jos
A coalition of Plateau State Youth Council (PYC) aspirants, has accused the electoral committee of rigging the Council’s elections which held on the 25th September, 2024 demanding the cancellation of the results, citing irregularities in the electoral process.

“The deployment of armed men to intimidate aspirants and members, the deliberate exclusion of local government chairmen from the electoral process in at least 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs), contrary to established norms, lack of transparency in candidate and delegate selection, with the list of qualified candidates and delegates unavailable to aspirants even on the eve of the election, reports of elections not held in more than 8 LGAs, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the process. The electoral committee’s refusal to address serious issues and petitions from various districts and LGAs, further eroding confidence in the process”, Peter alleged.

2. The deliberate exclusion of local government chairmen from the electoral process in at least 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs), contrary to established norms.
3. The lack of transparency in candidate and delegate selection, with the list of qualified candidates and delegates unavailable to aspirants even on the eve of the election.
4. Reports of elections not held in more than 8 LGAs, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the process.

Kano Denies Collecting ₦177 Billion Loan
Kano State has denied claims that it received a ₦177 billion loan from France, calling the reports “malicious” and “false.” The denial came after the online newspaper, DCL Hausa, published an article suggesting that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration had obtained the loan.
In an official statement, Hamisu Sadi Ali, Director General of the Kano State Public Debt Management Office, dismissed the claim, stressing that no loan had been taken. “The report is completely untrue and should be disregarded,” Ali said. He clarified that under the Kano State Public Debt Management Law of 2021, any borrowing by the government must be managed through the State Debt Management Office. “There are rigorous procedures to follow, especially with foreign lenders,” he added.
Ali emphasized that the current government, led by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), is focusing on servicing debts accumulated by the previous administration. He referenced a loan agreement signed in July 2018 by the former All Progressives Congress (APC) government under Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The APC administration had secured a subsidiary loan of €64 million from the French Development Agency for the National Urban Water Sector Reform Project, of which €13 million had already been disbursed.
The loan signed by Ganduje’s administration is the most recent foreign facility contracted by the state,” Ali noted, explaining that it was intended for the provision of affordable water services. He reiterated that since taking office on May 29, 2023, the Yusuf administration had not taken any new loans, either domestically or internationally.
Ali urged the public to disregard what he called “fake news” from outlets like DCL Hausa, accusing the publication of failing to conduct proper investigative journalism. He concluded by calling for more responsible reporting.
“The public should kindly ignore this fabricated report. Journalism should be a deeply investigative venture, not a tool for spreading non-factual, fabricated stories,” Ali said.
