Diphtheria kills 520 children in Kano- Govt

Kano State Government said over 520 children feared dead in a recent diphtheria out break in the state.

Director General Kano state Primary HealthCare management Board Dr. Muhammed Nasir Mahmoud confirmed this while speaking at a one day media orientation for media practitioner on diphtheria outbreak in Kano held on Tuesday.

He said since the outbreak of the disease in December 2022 kano state has recorded 8700 suspected cases out of which 6300 were confirmed cases.

He said out of the 44 LGAs of Kano state, the Diphtheria disease has spread to 39 LGAs with eight most affected where zero routine immunization was recorded.

According to him” only 27% children were fully vaccinated, 7.5% partly vaccinated, 59.9% not vaccinated and 5.5% unknown”

He said Kano state government with support from Federal Government and development partners are working closely to end the disease by December, 2023.

UNICEF Health Manager Dr. Serekeberehan S. Deres said the situation of children who have not received a single doses of immunization is critical, totally unacceptable and urgently need to be addressed.

According to NCDC “data shows, 60,7 per cent of confirmed cases of Diphtheria are zero-dose, meaning they have not been vaccinated at all”

He said some of the symptoms of the disease include, sore throat, difficulty in breath or rapid breathing, nasal discharge, fever and chills.

He noted that Nigeria needs to strengthen the Routine Immunization coverage to
address this challenge.

Dr Deres therefore called on the participants to be in the vanguard of sensitizing and mobilizing caregivers, government, families, communities, and everyone, on the importance of Routine Immunization.

It was reported that 80% of diphtheria cases was recorded in Kano state and out of which 60.8 are children.

– **Stay Alert and Calm:** Fasting can cause fatigue or dizziness. If you feel weak or drowsy, take a break before continuing your journey.
– Exercise Patience and Courtesy on the Road: Traffic congestion increases, particularly around markets and mosques. Avoid reckless driving and show understanding towards others.
– tay Hydrated and Eat Light Before Driving:Ensure you drink enough water and eat a light meal at Suhoor to maintain energy and focus while driving.
– Watch Out for Pedestrians and Cyclists:Many people walk to mosques, especially at night. Drive carefully, especially in crowded areas.
– Plan Your Journeys in Advance:f possible, avoid traveling during peak congestion times and drive when you are in good condition.
– Follow Traffic Rules and KAROTA Officials’ Instructions:Adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations to protect your life and that of others.

KAROTA remains committed to ensuring road safety during Ramadan and will increase patrols to facilitate smooth traffic flow. The agency urges all drivers to embrace patience, respect one another, and drive responsibly during this holy month.

Kano State Government Welcomes Court of Appeal Judgment on Emirate Council Dispute

The Kano State Government has expressed profound satisfaction with the recent judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, regarding the Emirate Council matter involving His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II and other parties. This was announced during a press conference jointly addressed by the Hon. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Hon. Commissioner for Information, Kano State, on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Kano.

“On behalf of the Kano State Government, we express our profound satisfaction with the Judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, regarding the Emirate Council matter involving His Highness Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II and other parties,” stated the Hon. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice.

The verdict overturns earlier decisions by the Federal High Court and validates the government’s lawful actions regarding chieftaincy appointments and reforms in the state’s traditional institutions. “This ruling reaffirms the government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and adherence to due process in our efforts to modernize traditional structures while preserving the cultural heritage of Kano State,” added the Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The judgment further clarifies the rightful jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, underscoring the constitutional boundaries of the courts in such affairs. “The decision by the appellate court to void previous judgments that questioned the state’s lawful appointments underscores the correctness of our actions and strengthens our resolve to continue reforms for equitable representation and inclusive governance,” emphasized the Hon. Commissioner for Information.

For the avoidance of doubt, all decisions, pronouncements, and orders made by the Federal High Court Kano have been quashed and set aside by the Court of Appeal. “Furthermore, the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly relating to Emirates and all actions taken by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State pursuant to that law have been fully upheld and legalized by the Court of Appeal,” the Hon. Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice clarified.

Governor Yusuf set to disburse N3bn to flood victims

Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has completed arrangements to flag off distribution of three billion naira (N3b) to victims of flood in last rainy season in the affected areas.

Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this while declaring opened the 23rd State Executive Council Meeting held at Kano Government House today.

A statement issued by Governor’s spokesperson Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Wednesday said, Governor Yusuf revealed that the amount was donated by the Federal Government to the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory as intervention for the 2024 flood disaster.

The governor further revealed that the money was remitted to the state treasury few months ago in preparation for onward distribution the the affected victims.

He added that the administration kept the money appropriately to identify the real victims who will benefit from the gesture of the Federal Government and ensure produnce, accountability and responsiveness in the process.

“Now that we are ready, we have all the lists of the victims, we know how much each victim will collect, so the distribution will commence,” the governor assured.

He said already a main and sub committees for the distribution of the donation were set up and would go accross the 44 local government areas to disburse amount to real victims. Gov. Yusuf affirmed

It could be recalled that National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) with support from Intentional donor organisations have tracked the areas and people affected by the flood in Kano state.
