Kano State Governor, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the Emergency Refuse Evacuation Plan for immediate clearing of refuse heaps on the streets of Kano metropolis.

The Governor , who is concerned over the implications of garbage littering roads, said lackadaisical attitude of the immediate past administration towards environmental hygiene may cause the State unimaginable losses, resulting from flooding in the rainy season if major drainages blocked by garbage are not desilted immediately.

Recall that the Governor has approved Operation Nazafa, a Task Force on Refuse Disposal, Evacuation of Drainages and Streets Cleaning composed of different stakeholder groups in the State.

He described as unfortunate, the outright sale of the critical assets of the State’s Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) to family members and friends of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, under the cover of a dubious Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, making it difficult to achieve effective solid waste management.

”They have sold all the critical assets including trucks belonging to REMASAB. We have no option than to hire tippers and other equipment to quickly clear the dumps from the streets in a bid to restore efficient environmental sanitation in Kano.
”We have identified major refuse dumping sites in the city and therefore categorized them into five zones for efficient and effective evacuation that will start soon. The operation will be carried out day and night until everything in Kano is cleaned up,” the Governor said.

Governor Abba urged the residents of Kano to cooperate with the officials who will carry out the refuse evacuation exercise in the coming days in order to avert flooding, pollution and health hazards associated with the poor environmental hygiene

In an effort to ensure that citizens are fully informed about government policies and programs, the Kano State Government has pledged to update Juma’at Mosque Imams on its activities.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, made the pledge on Tuesday at a two-day sensitization workshop for Juma’at Mosque Imams, organized by the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry for Religious Affairs and the Kano State Council of Imams.

The Commissioner explained that the present administration, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, considers Islamic teachers and Imams as critical stakeholders in society. He emphasized the government’s respect for them and promised to strengthen the relationship further.

Comrade Ibrahim Waiya stated that the messages conveyed by Imams in their sermons are powerful and can easily influence society, urging them to always use the right statements.

“You are highly respected among community members, and your messages are valued. That is why the government wants to collaborate with you for proper dissemination of information.”

The workshop, themed *”Building a Better Future Together: Understanding and Supporting Government Policies for Societal Development,”* aims to equip clerics with knowledge about government policies.

The Commissioner also urged the Imams to provide the government with advice that would help in developing the state, calling on them to utilize the information gathered at the event in their subsequent sermons.

In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, urged the Imams to educate their followers on the importance of a peaceful society.

He stated that it is not right for Imams and clerics to prioritize opposing one another. Instead, he encouraged them to teach their followers their religion and convey the truth to those in authority.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Council of Friday Mosque Chief Imams, Sheikh Muhammad Nasir Adam, noted that it is against their tradition to offer advice to the governor or emir during sermons, as such matters are addressed privately.

Many Islamic clerics and Imams of Friday Mosques are attending the sensitization workshop, which will conclude on Wednesday.
