Osinbajo Discusses Rising Coups In Africa

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo with his Tanzanian Counterpart Philip Mpangno

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his Tanzanian counterpart, Philip Mpango, on Sunday, in Arusha, Tanzania, held bilateral talks.

The two spoke on issues ranging from climate change and technology to deterring unconstitutional changes of government in Africa.

Osinbajo is in Tanzania to speak at inaugural session of the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights for the year 2022 scheduled for Feb. 28.

They also discussed issues of interest to both Nigeria and Tanzania, including infrastructure development, trade and investment, technology, climate change and democracy.

According to Osinbajo, ECOWAS has experienced in just under a year, four coups d’etat including attempts.

He said that it was disturbing because such things ought to have been put behind the region.

“It is something that we think has to do with more cooperation. AU has been very forthcoming (in condemnation) in saying that we cannot tolerate unconstitutional seizures of power.

“But sanctioning these coupists without any proper “teeth” has not been particularly effective.

“There might be a need for us to reach out to some of the regional bodies, development financial institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, and the EU.

”The EU has been quite responsive but we think that we can do a lot more just in terms of cooperation, so there is an effective deterrent if everyone agrees that undemocratic change of government is unacceptable.”

On climate change and the attendant goal of net-zero emissions, Osinbajo said the major challenge was that the wealthier countries were abandoning fossil fuels and gas and some of them were already defunding gas projects.

He said it was important  to keep focus on the transition to net-zero emissions, but also important for the world to know that Africa had two challenges – Climate Change and development.

“We in Africa will run into trouble because gas projects are important even for the transition.

“It is important for us to come together to oppose any situation where the wealthier countries insist that on account of going towards net-zero emissions in 2050, we should then abandon gas which is one of the major sources of energy for industry and clean cooking.

”We think that the wealthier countries are asking us to do what they didn’t do – use renewable energy for industry.

“While we are interested in ensuring that we meet net-zero emissions target, we are also interested in ensuring that we develop.”

On the place of technology in economic growth, Osinbajo said that growth would be technology-led, adding that from 2016, six Nigerian companies had become UNICORNS – companies worth over a billion dollars.

“All these companies started in 2016, including Flutterwave which was recently valued at over 3billion dollars.

“Technology is very important to us and we have investments in broadband infrastructure across the country and consider it to be fundamental to our economic growth.

“Even with what we have done, it is incredible how many new businesses in technology have come up, startups springing up every day.

”It is an exciting time for us, especially for those investing in technology startups across all sectors – education, health, and FinTech.

“There is also financial inclusion because there were many parts of the country that banks didn’t bother to go to, but with technology, we are able to reach all of those places,” he said.

On his part, Mpango commended West African leaders for their efforts to halt the menace of coups d’etat in the sub-region and also agreed that Africa can achieve more working in unison.

He said that climate change was an example of one area leaders on the continent needed to work together to address.

“The apparent wish by developed countries to abandon fossil fuel is worrisome because we are still struggling to provide the basics.

”Our forests are disappearing because our people are still forced to use firewood for cooking, if we abandon gas energy, where do we go to?”

The Tanzanian vice president thanked Osinbajo for accepting the invitation of the African Court to be the guest speaker at the formal opening of the Court’s 2022 Judicial Year.

Both leaders also agreed that the relationship between their countries had been notable over the years, adding however, that there was room for more improvement.

The two leaders agreed that arrangements for the Joint Commission between both countries should proceed.

Mpango recalled Nigeria’s role in the fight to end apartheid in Southern Africa.

“Nigeria never abandoned her brothers and sisters in South Africa.

He added that both countries have been working together and supporting each other internationally since 1962 including at the United Nations and in Africa. (NAN)

The Kano state commissioner for internal security and special services AVM Ibrahim Umar (Rtd) has resigned his post with immediate effect.

The Commissioner disclosed this in a letter of resignation addressed to the executive governor of Kano state Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, a copy of which was sent to GLOBAL TRACKER in Kano on Monday.

According to him, the decision is based on strained relationship between Kano state governor and his political mentor Engineer Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.

The letter reads “I write with profound gratitude and a deep sense of duty to formally tender my resignation from my position as the Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Kano State, with immediate effect. I wish to express my sincere appreciation to you, Your Excellency, for the trust and confidence you reposed in me.

First, by appointing me as the Director General of the Special Services Directorate in June 2023, and subsequently elevating me to the role of Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services.

It has been a distinct honour and privilege to be entrusted with the duty of ensuring the safety and security of our beloved Kano State under your leadership.

“However, following the recent turn of events, I believe it is in the best interest of the state and the administration that I step aside from this role. This decision, though difficult, is made after careful consideration.

My service in these roles has been guided by the enduring principles of our leader and mentor, His Excellency, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which emphasise justice, discipline, and service to the people.

“I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, however modestly, to the security and wellbeing of our citizens.

“I assure you of my continued support to the government and people of Kano State, as well as its goals for a safe, stronger, and more prosperous Kano State.

Once again, I thank you for the invaluable opportunity to serve. I pray that Almighty Allah continues to bless you with wisdom, strength, and good health while you steer the affairs of our great state.

May Allah (SWT) bless Kano State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

BREAKING: Military Confirms Plot to Oust Tinubu, Officers to Face Trial

By Yusuf Danjuma Yunusa

The Nigerian military high command has confirmed that a group of its officers plotted to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

This admission follows a months-long investigation into reports, first emerging in October 2025, that officers from the rank of Captain to Brigadier-General had been arrested and detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) over the alleged coup attempt.

The military’s statement, issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, comes in response to a media report detailing how a panel that probed the arrested officers had submitted its findings to the President.

In the statement, Major-General Uba confirmed that the investigation had been concluded and the report forwarded to the “appropriate superior authority.”

“The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN (Armed Forces of Nigeria),” Uba stated.

He announced that “those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.”

Uba explained that the public disclosure was made to ensure accountability while upholding “the principles of fairness and due process.” He emphasised that the measures are “purely disciplinary” and part of institutional efforts to “preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.”

“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” the statement concluded.

News Analysis: Governor Yusuf’s Defection — What Is Kwankwaso’s Next Line of Action?

Published

on

By Yusuf Danjuma Yunusa

Kano State has recently been inundated by seismic political developments: the resignation of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and key cabinet members from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), their anticipated defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and the declaration of January 23 as ‘World Betrayal Day’ by Yusuf’s former political benefactor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Given the profound loyalty Governor Yusuf had previously shown Kwankwaso, his recent political realignment has left many observers stunned. What is particularly striking is that Yusuf is defecting to the very opposition party against which Kwankwaso fiercely contested to install him as governor.

Political analysts note that, contrary to popular perception, politics is seldom driven by ideology. Instead, they argue it thrives on dominance, survival, and compromise—qualities repeatedly weaponized by political godfathers and their protégés for advantage. Rare exceptions, such as the relationships between Kashim Shettima and Babagana Zulum in Borno or Yahya Bello and Usman Ododo in Kogi, only underscore the rule.

If this is the reality, would it not be unwise for Kwankwaso to simply handpick another political heir to fill the vacuum left by Yusuf? Some commentators argue it would be more strategic for the NNPP leader to elevate his focus to the national stage, rather than remain confined to a cycle of state-level politics that has proven repetitive and unyielding.

The central question remains: which path will Kwankwaso now take? Will he anoint a new successor to challenge his ‘prodigal son,’ Yusuf, in the next election? Should he align with opposition forces like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to weaken President Bola Tinubu’s APC nationally while curtailing Yusuf’s influence in Kano? Or might he pursue a twin-track strategy, engaging on both fronts simultaneously?

Kwankwaso himself has hinted that the current realignment has forced a strategic recalculation. In a widely circulated video, he stated that recent events have made preparation for the next move imperative ahead of 2027.

“Going by what is happening in Kano today, we need to start preparing because there are people hell-bent on destroying what we built over time,” Kwankwaso said.

The coming months will reveal whether the seasoned political figure chooses retribution, reinvention, or a combination of both as his way forward.
