Book Launch of “Tarihin Hajiya Malama ‘Yar Kyakke” Set for February 15, 2025

The much-anticipated book launch of “Tarihin Hajiya Malama ‘Yar Kyakke,” written by Saidu Mustapha Buhari, is scheduled to take place on February 15, 2025. The biography chronicles the life of Hajiya Malama Aminatu ‘Yar Kyakke, a revered Islamic scholar from Dambatta, Northern Nigeria.

In an interview, Buhari expressed his deep sense of honor and privilege in authoring the biography of such a rare and honorable personality. “It is a great honor to write a book, and the honor multiplies when you have the great privilege and honor of authoring a biography of a rare, great, and honorable personality. Alhamdulillah,” he stated.

The idea for the book came in 2019, when Dr. Bala Umar Dambatta advised Buhari to document the life of Hajiya Malama Yar Kyakke. Embracing the suggestion with inquisitiveness, Buhari embarked on a journey filled with interviews and consultations, resulting in the birth of the biography.

Hajiya Malama Aminatu ‘Yar Kyakke, born in the early 1920s, was a remarkable Islamic scholar who thrived in Dambatta. Despite being born in an era when girls were often married off at a young age, Malama dedicated herself to acquiring and imparting knowledge. She was a gifted figure who absorbed any piece of knowledge that came her way from a very tender age.

Buhari’s biography takes readers on a fascinating journey through Malama’s life of virtuousness, discipline, and erudition. Hajiya Malama taught in the traditional Makarantun Allo way, overseeing and graduating many students who have gone on to excel in various fields. Her story is unique and worth telling, especially considering the rarity of such learned women in the patriarchal societies of Northern Nigeria.

“Imagine a learned woman surrounded by almajirais, teaching and correcting their recitations. Imagine a woman, despite being tied to her domestic chores, writing diverse chapters of the Holy Qur’an for numerous students! We will have a vivid picture of a rare gem glaring at us,” Buhari explained. He emphasized that Malama was a disciplinarian who stood for integrity, trust, and diligence.

Many pupils who attended Makarantar Hajiya Malama have become successful personalities, including high-placed academics, businessmen, and malamas. The launch event promises to be a tribute to her enduring legacy.

The book launch is scheduled as follows:
Date:February 15, 2025
Time:10:30 a.m.
Venue:School of Basic Midwifery Dambatta Premises.

The public is invited to attend and celebrate the life and contributions of Hajiya Malama ‘Yar Kyakke.
