Gabriel Tomoniโ€™s recent broadcast attacking the Rivers Ijaw Peoplesโ€™ Congress (RIPCO) is not only disappointing, it is deeply misdirected, emotional, and constitutionally hollow.
RIPCO did not issue its statement out of malice, betrayal, or hostility to the Ijaw Nation.

We spoke from history, from facts, and from a deep understanding of political reality; three things that cannot be replaced by ethnic chest-beating.
Let us be clear from the outset:

Nyesom Wike is not an enemy of the Ijaw Nation. Any attempt by the INC or IYC to frame him as such is intellectually dishonest and historically false.

๐‘ถ๐’ ๐‘พ๐’Š๐’Œ๐’† ๐‘จ๐’๐’… ๐‘ฐ๐’‹๐’‚๐’˜ ๐‘ฐ๐’๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’†๐’”๐’•๐’” – ๐‘ญ๐’‚๐’„๐’•๐’”, ๐‘ต๐’๐’• ๐‘บ๐’†๐’๐’•๐’Š๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•

Since becoming Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has facilitated over 20 federal appointments for Ijaw sons and daughters; the highest concentration of Ijaw federal appointments within a single political season in our history.

This is not propaganda. These appointments are verifiable in public records across federal boards, agencies, commissions, and ministerial structures.
For the avoidance of doubt:

Even during the presidency of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the Ijaw Nation did not record this volume of strategic federal placements.

Influence in Nigerian politics is measured by access, appointments, and leverage, not by slogans and street rhetoric.

๐‘พ๐’‰๐’†๐’ ๐‘พ๐’Š๐’Œ๐’† ๐‘พ๐’‚๐’” ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’๐’๐’“, ๐‘พ๐’‰๐’ ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’๐’†๐’‡๐’Š๐’•๐’†๐’…?

As Governor of Rivers State, Wike deliberately zoned virtually all critical power blocs of government to Ijaw interests, including:

– Key security-sensitive offices
– Revenue and infrastructure-driven ministries
– Strategic political and administrative appointments
– This was not accidental. It was intentional inclusion.

Yet today, the same man is being branded an โ€œenemyโ€ by those who benefited most from his decisions.

– That is not activism.
– That is political amnesia.

๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† 24-๐’€๐’†๐’‚๐’“ ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’๐’๐’“๐’”๐’‰๐’Š๐’‘ ๐‘ซ๐’“๐’๐’–๐’ˆ๐’‰๐’•; ๐‘พ๐’‰๐’ ๐‘ญ๐’Š๐’™๐’†๐’… ๐‘ฐ๐’•?

Let history speak plainly.

After Dr. Peter Odili, Ijaws endured a 24-year governorship drought in Rivers State, dominated largely by Ikwere political succession.

Even Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, despite being Ijaw, and married to an Ijaw woman, could not produce an Ijaw Governor in Rivers State.

Why?
Because at critical moments, Ijaw political elites (Jonathan’s) abandoned their own credible sons, including:

– Abiye Sekibo
– George Sekibo
– Sampson Parker
– Tammy Danagogo
and others

They were abandoned not because they lacked competence, but because political pragmatism – not ethnic sentiment – favoured Wike as the only man capable of dismantling the Amaechi succession machine.

Those same Ijaw elites (Jonathan’s) rallied behind Wike, because they knew power respects capacity, not ancestry.

It was Nyesom Wike – not the IYC, not the INC – that personally took responsibility to produce an Ijaw Governor in Siminalayi Fubara after 24 years of exclusion.

He had other viable options:
– Ogoni
– Ikwere
Yet he chose Ijaw.

That decision restructured Rivers politics permanently.

Three months into office, however, Governor Fubara turned against the very political structure that brought him to power.

Call it independence if you like – but rebellion without constitutional discipline is recklessness.

๐‘ช๐’๐’๐’”๐’•๐’Š๐’•๐’–๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐‘จ๐’ƒ๐’๐’—๐’† ๐‘ฌ๐’•๐’‰๐’๐’Š๐’„๐’Š๐’•๐’š

This is where Gabriel Tomoni and his allies have failed the Ijaw Nation.

The Rivers crisis is no longer about Wike vs Fubara.
– It is about law vs impunity.
– The Supreme Court has ruled.
– The Constitution is clear.
– A Governor cannot lawfully spend public funds without presenting a budget.
– Persistent refusal constitutes gross misconduct.

Instead of mediating and calling their โ€œsonโ€ to order, the INC and IYC chose ethnic bias over constitutional responsibility – openly cheering actions that undermine the rule of law.

– That is dangerous precedent.
– Today it favours an Ijaw man.
– Tomorrow it will destroy an Ijaw administration.

๐‘ถ๐’ ๐‘ฐ๐’Ž๐’‘๐’†๐’‚๐’„๐’‰๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’• – ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’‚๐’Ž๐’† ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’–๐’”๐’†, ๐‘ต๐’๐’• ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ท๐’“๐’๐’„๐’†๐’”๐’”

If the Rivers State House of Assembly is moving toward impeachment, it is not because Fubara is Ijaw.

It is because:
– Court judgments are being ignored
– Legislative authority is being undermined
– Public funds are being spent outside constitutional limits

* No ethnic organization should defend illegality.
* Ijaw dignity is not protected by lawlessness.

๐‘พ๐’‰๐’š ๐‘น๐‘ฐ๐‘ท๐‘ช๐‘ถ ๐‘ป๐’๐’๐’Œ ๐‘ฐ๐’•๐’” ๐‘บ๐’•๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’†

Rivers Ijaw Peoplesโ€™ Congress has a simple, principled position:
– Yes, Fubara is our son.
– But the Constitution is superior to bloodlines.
– Wike stood by the law, the Assembly, and institutional order.
– We owe gratitude, not war, to the man who restored Ijaw relevance in Rivers politics.

โ€ข Politics is memory.
โ€ข Politics is reciprocity.
โ€ข Politics punishes ingratitude.

If the Ijaw Nation is seen as hostile to allies after benefiting from them, other ethnic blocs will think twice before supporting an Ijaw cause in the future.

Gabriel Tomoni should redirect his courage.
Instead of attacking RIPCO, he should:

โ€ข Admonish Governor Fubara to obey court judgments
โ€ข Demand constitutional compliance
โ€ข Call for reconciliation, not escalation
โ€ข Defend the rule of law, not selective ethnicity
โ€ข That is leadership.

In three years, what tangible political capital has Governor Fubara delivered to the Ijaw Nation – locally or nationally?
Now compare that to:

– What Wike did in his first tenure as Governor
– What he is still doing today as FCT Minister
– Then answer honestly:

Who has truly proven himself a son of the Ijaw Nation – even if adopted?

El-Rufaiโ€™s Counsel Threatens Legal Action Over Airport Face-off

The legal team of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, on Thursday condemned what it described as an unlawful attempt by security operatives to arrest their client upon his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by Ubong Esop Akpan of The Chambers of Ubong Akpan, counsel to El-Rufai, the lawyers alleged that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) attempted to arrest the former governor without presenting a warrant or formal invitation.

According to the statement, El-Rufai arrived in Abuja aboard Egypt Air flight MS 877 from Cairo when security agents moved to detain him.

The legal team argued that the invitation earlier issued by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was delivered to El-Rufaiโ€™s residence while he was out of the country, describing any demand for immediate appearance as โ€œillogical and impractical.โ€

The lawyers said they had formally communicated with the EFCC since December 2025, assuring the Commission that El-Rufai would honour the invitation upon his return. They further stated that the EFCC was notified that he would voluntarilyx appear at its office by 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026.

They described the alleged attempt to arrest him despite this commitment as arbitrary and a violation of due process.

The statement further alleged that security operatives seized El-Rufaiโ€™s international passport during the encounter, an action the legal team characterised as unlawful.

Citing provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the lawyers contended that the attempted arrest breached their clientโ€™s fundamental rights, including the right to personal liberty, fair hearing, dignity of the human person, freedom of movement and right to own property.

โ€œNo government agency possesses unfettered authority to detain citizens without due process,โ€ the statement read, adding that all state institutions are bound by constitutional safeguards.

The legal team demanded the โ€œimmediate and unconditional cessationโ€ of any attempt to detain El-Rufai, the return of his passport, and a formal apology for what it termed an infringement on his rights and dignity.

It also maintained that the former governor would honour all legitimate law enforcement summons and would not evade lawful investigation.

The lawyers warned that legal action would be pursued against individuals and agencies allegedly responsible for the incident, stressing that the judiciary remains the proper avenue for resolving the matter.

As of press time, there was no official response from the DSS or the EFCC regarding the allegations.

Senate Grills AGF Over Zero Capital Allocations, Unpaid Contracts in 2025 Budget

The Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Dr Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, faced intense questioning on Thursday as the Senate Committee on Finance scrutinised the 2025 budget implementation, citing zero capital allocations to several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), mounting unpaid contracts and concerns over the Centralised Payment System.

The heated exchange occurred during the AGFโ€™s budget defence session, where lawmakers voiced frustration over what they described as poor fund releases and low implementation levels despite increased government revenues.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Sani Musa (Niger East), opened the session with sharp criticism, accusing the Office of the Accountant-General of maintaining what he termed an โ€œunfriendlyโ€ posture toward the committee.

โ€œWe are not going to take your budget until we are satisfied that your office is ready to do things that will make things work for Nigerians,โ€ Musa said.

He also questioned the continued use of the envelope budgeting system, arguing that it had failed to deliver desired outcomes and should be replaced with a more performance-based framework.

Senator Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central) described the current situation as โ€œembarrassing,โ€ noting a surge in complaints from contractors over unpaid jobs since 2024.

โ€œWe have never seen contractors bombarding us weekly for intervention on non-payment of executed contracts,โ€ Goje said.

He queried the impact of recent fiscal reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, which were expected to boost government revenues.

โ€œThe impression given to Nigerians is that more money is available. Where is the money now? Why are contractors owed? And why was there zero allocation for capital votes of most MDAs in 2025?โ€ he asked.

Senator Muntari Dandutse (Katsina South) raised concerns over reports that revenue-generating agencies recorded N28 trillion, yet many contractors remain unpaid and several MDAs have no capital allocation.

โ€œWhat happened to the N28 trillion?โ€ he asked, adding that the Centralised Payment System had not improved the situation and was allegedly affecting government operations.

Other lawmakers, including Senators Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central), Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North), Aminu Abbas (Adamawa Central) and Patrick Ndubueze (Imo North), urged the AGF to advise President Bola Tinubu on the need to prevent possible internal sabotage within the system.

Responding, Ogunjimi attributed the funding challenges to indiscriminate contract awards by some MDAs without confirmed budgetary backing. He said a directive had been issued prohibiting agencies from awarding contracts without available funds.

โ€œAs Accountant-General, my office can only disburse funds that are available. I must have the funds before I can release them,โ€ he said.

He also noted that the previous reliance on โ€œWays and Meansโ€ financing had been discontinued in the interest of economic stability.

While acknowledging operational challenges with the Centralised Payment System, the AGF assured lawmakers that steps were being taken to address the issues and improve efficiency.

The committee later moved into a closed-door session with the AGF for further deliberations.

Fubara Orders Immediate Dissolution of Rivers Executive Council

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has dissolved the State Executive Council with immediate effect.

The announcement was made in a Government Special Announcement issued on Thursday and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onwuka Nzeshi.

According to the statement, all Commissioners and Special Advisers have been directed to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries or the most senior officers in their respective ministries without delay.

โ€œHis Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, has dissolved the State Executive Council,โ€ the statement read.

The governor also expressed appreciation to the outgoing members of the Executive Council for their service and wished them well in their future endeavours.

No reason was provided for the dissolution at the time of filing this report.
