<p>Former Military President of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his longtime friend, colleague, and fellow soldier, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.</p>
<p>In an emotionally-laden tribute personally signed and released on Sunday, July 13, 2025, General Babangida described Buhari as more than just a fellow officer, calling him a “friend, brother, course mate, and a patriot,” whose passing marks the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s history.</p>
<p>“Our paths crossed in 1962 when we both joined the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna. From those early days, Muhammadu stood out quiet yet resolute, principled yet humble, deeply patriotic and fiercely loyal to Nigeria,” Babangida recalled.</p><div class="0hbHCybe" style="clear:both;float:left;width:100%;margin:0 0 20px 0;"><script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

<p>He noted that their bond was forged not only through shared military training but also by a joint dedication to national service and discipline. Over the decades, they faced both triumphs and tribulations together, and their careers led them into national leadership roles under different historical circumstances.</p>

<p>Reflecting on Buhari’s time in leadership, Babangida said, “He served Nigeria with a deep sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment, even when the road was lonely or misunderstood. Buhari remained consistent in his belief in integrity, order, and the dignity of public office.”</p>

<p>The former Head of State also paid tribute to Buhari’s private character, describing him as a “deeply spiritual man” who found strength in faith and humility. While acknowledging that they did not always agree on everything, Babangida emphasized that Buhari’s sincerity and patriotism were never in doubt.</p>
<p>“His passing today is not just the loss of a former Head of State or a two-term civilian President. It is the loss of a symbol — a man whose life embodied the transition of Nigeria from the old guard to the new republic,” he stated.</p>
<p>General Babangida further described the late President as a moral compass and an enduring example of modesty in public life, even in retirement. He said Buhari&#8217;s death leaves behind a void that will be hard to fill in the political and moral conscience of the nation.</p>
<p>To the late President’s family, Babangida offered his condolences, writing, “To his beloved wife Aisha, his children, grandchildren, and the nation he loved and served I extend my deepest condolences. May Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, accept his deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”</p>
<p>He concluded with a solemn prayer: “May his legacy endure.”</p>
<p>President Muhammadu Buhari died on July 13, 2025, and is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, children, grandchildren, and millions of admirers across Nigeria and beyond.</p>
