Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad  Abubakar Mahmud Gumi says the military is no longer a solution to Nigeria’s myriad of problems.

The Sheikh made this known in one of his preaching sessions at Sultan Bello Jumuat Mosque in Kaduna.

The Sheikh, who is a retired Major in the Nigerian Army and a medical doctor, said the military started to weaken and coups became ineffective since the abortive coup led by Major Gideon Orkar on April 22nd, 1990.

He said since then, no coup in Nigeria has ever succeeded because, by the time Major Gideon Orkar struck and announced the toppling of General Ibrahim Babangida’s government, the GOC mechanised division Major General Dantsoho Muhammad came out to dissociate his division from the coup

According to the Sheikh, who is very versatile in Islamic jurisprudence, the system of government we are currently practicing is still better than the military to lead the nation.

He said the opportunities provided by democracy allow people to come out to elect leaders and change them at any time.

According to the Sheikh, military leaders create problems for their countries. He cited the example of General Hassan Umar Albashir of Sudan, who led his country for over 30 years without a succession plan. He said that led his grandchildren to overthrow him from power, and as a result, the country has been split.

According to Sheikh Gumi, if the military intervenes in Nigeria today, it will not augur well for the nation, hence the need to sustain the present political system
