Kano City, September 27th, 2023 – The Northern Youth Assembly (Majalisar Matasan Arewa) has issued an open letter to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to prevent political turmoil in Kano State, following alleged interference in the Kano State Governorship Elections Tribunal judgment. The assembly expressed concern that such actions could destabilize the state and erode trust in the democratic system.
In the letter addressed to President Tinubu, the assembly introduced itself as a youth-focused organization established in 2010, operating nationally and at the state level in all nineteen Northern states and Abuja. They emphasized the critical role Kano State plays in the North’s economic stability and as a unifying force.
The assembly raised concerns about electoral injustice and the loss of citizen confidence in the democratic system due to alleged manipulation of the Kano State Governorship Elections Tribunal judgment by some members of the government. They warned that this action could provoke a political crisis in Kano State and subsequently affect the entire nation.
The assembly also reminded President Tinubu of his tenure as Executive Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, highlighting that, despite political differences, the federal government under President Olusegun Obasanjo did not intervene to snatch his mandate, respecting the will of the people.
In conclusion, the Northern Youth Assembly urged President Tinubu to intervene, caution party members allegedly involved in interfering with the Kano State Governorship Elections Tribunal judgment, and uphold democratic principles, fairness, and the rule of law.
