A one-day Kano state Commissioner of Education, Master Al-Zubair Bashir on Friday called on the state government to redoubled its efforts on the education of the most vulnerable children in the state.

Bashir made the call while briefing newsmen about the outcome of children’s deliberation on issues concerning his  colleagues for two hours.

The children ran the affairs of the state Ministry of Education in commemoration of the World Children’s Day (WCD) 2020 which lasted for two hours.

According to Bashir, the most vulnerable children in the society need more attention from the government, especially the children with special needs.

He said that this was part of their resolutions at the end of his meeting with the acting heads of departments and agencies under the ministry.

The one-day commissioner said: “The right to education as we all know, is identified as a basic human right and is understood to establish an entitlement to free and compulsory primary education for all children, and continuous access to secondary and higher education.

“This fundamental right to education of a child must eliminate discrimination at all levels of the educational system, set minimum standards, and improve the quality of education through infrastructural capacity-building and strengthening.

“Education should be available for all children with little or no cost. Government should be able to make education available for all children irrespective of their status in the society.

“Especially, government should make education available to the most vulnerable among us,such as blind, deaf and dumb children and at no cost.

“Government and public-spirited individuals and organisations should make education accessible for every child. In this light, no child should be discriminated on the basis of gender or disability,” he stated.

The one-day commissioner also called on the government to make children’s education flexible and easy in order to promote equitable outcomes for learning.

While handing over the leadership of the ministry to the children, the State’s Commissioner of Education, Malam Sanusi Kiru commended the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for organising the event.

He explained that the state government is doing everything possible to ensure that children in the state are giving quality education.

Kiru emphasised that the importance of child education has led to the declaration of free and compulsory primary to secondary school education by the state government.

“With the introduction of this free and compulsory education, the school enrollment in the state has increased drastically. Presently, we have more than 1.9 million children in Primary 1-3.
