Extrajudicial killing of two Kano youth by Anti-Daba. High time for Kano State to empanel the FG-advised judicial commission of inquiry to investigate police brutality and misconduct in the state.
I was reluctant to post about this disturbing update several hours after the info reached me earlier today, that, a certain team of Anti-Daba operational unit of the Nigeria Police has extrajudicially killed two young persons in Kano -one of whom died from multiple knife stabs by one of the police officers in the team.
Police Allegedly Killed Two Youth In Kano
The Anti-Daba outfit of the Kano command is not professionally briefed to receive or deal with non-violent crimes, the prevention of which they are formed, and for which truth be told, they have played some role in reducing.
On the downside however, the police unit is undoubtedly next after the infamous SARS, in bolder violation of human rights in form of torture, prolonged detention, brazen display of impunity, extortion and other illegal and unprofessional conducts.
The Officer-in-Charge of the unit -a very hubristic, unprofessional, exasperating chap- against whom last week, in a rather annoying manner, I was forced to withdraw a fundamental right enforcement case (after my pro bono client unilaterally settled the matter with the principal respondents behind my back), is someone who in saner climes wouldn’t be allowed to man even a patrol raid.
I have severally written against him in respect of his many unlawful activities but up till now, no action is taken (the reason I was personally angered by the withdrawal of my case against him).
Against this background, the police service commission is hereby called upon to take swift and decisive action on all the officers of the Anti-Daba operational unit having its headquarters at Tal’udu Kano State involved in the extrajudicial killing of these two Kano youths.
The Kano state government is also called upon to set up the FG advised judicial commission of enquiry in order to investigate the many cases of police brutality in Kano and to redress families of the victims.
