On 20th September 2020, the Emir of Zazzau Alhaji Shehu Idris passed away after a protracted illness and was buried the same day according to Islamic injunctions.
The tradition in the Northern part of this country is whenever a monarch dies on the throne, it hardly exceeds 3 days without the appointment of a new Emir.
Some records after the demise of Emir Aminu who preceded Late Emir of Zazzau Shehu Idris it only took the military government of Brigadier Abba Kyari 8 days to appoint a New Emir.
Suddenly Governor Nasiru –El-Rufai surprised people by posting on his Facebook page that after recommendations from the kingmakers he was reading a book written by MG Smith on the appointment of Emirs of Zazzau. He also posted that he was reading other books to guide him. This has created undue tension and apprehension within the emirate.

A lot of people criticized Governor EL-Rufai for trying to ridicule an ancient emirate like Zazzau because of his personal interest in trying to foist an Emir on the Emirate.
After the selection by the 5 Kingmakers, Palace sources told Nigerian Tracker that when the Governor asked the Kingmakers to reconsider their selection of the New Emir of Zazzau since his favorite candidate wasn’t among the top contenders.
It emerged that the Governor canceled the nomination of the first 3 top contenders citing an allegation of inducement, and bias against 2 contenders who were not allowed to contest.
When the Kingmakers followed the Instruction of Governor for the second time, sources say that Iyan Zazzau was said to have topped the list again according to sources.
The source said the preferred candidate of Governor Nasir EL-Rufai for is still Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Thailand Ahmafd Bamalli.
As at present it is not known when Governor Nasie r EL –Rufai will announce the New Emir of Zazzau, two weeks after the demise of Alhaji Shehu Idris.
