Volunteer Service Overseas, VSO in conjunction with Adolescent Health and Information project AHIP has produced and distribute learning materials to children from poor homes in the local governments of Kumbotso and Bunkure of Kano state
The programme manager education Volunteer Service Overseas Christabel Omolade stated this during the launching of the programme held at the premises of Adolescent Health Information Project office in Kano.
Christabel said they are supporting two local governments in the state especially the vulnerable from the two local governments of Kumbotso and children with disability to learn at home and school.
She said during the COVID 19 lockdown they provide a radio to children who can not access radio, especially in the rural areas.
According to her solar transistor radio was provided due to lack of electricity in their domain so that they can learn at home.
Mrs Christabel said the Radio is for 500 households and it’s reaching about 6000 thousand children in the local the two local government.
According to Christabel the reason why they chose Kumbotso local government was that it’s an urban slump because it was cut out from the rest of the metropolitan LGS.
She noted that there is a gap between the privileged children and the downtrodden in terms of learning during the lockdown.
In her remark, Hajiya Mairo Bello the founder of Adolescent Health and Information project Mairo Bello said the essence of the programme is to make education more inclusive especially to children with disabilities.
She said they are working with like minds to make sure they better the education of the vulnerable.
On his part, the Executive chairman Kano state universal Basic Education Board Dr Danlami Hayyo urged other nongovernmental organizations to emulate VSO and AHIP in helping the vulnerable attain educational dreams.
He said educations needs a huge budget which if the government can dedicate all its budget the sector will consume it.
