Towards Improving Girl Child Education In Nigeria

The provision of basic education for Girls is accepted as an important social goal for counties in Africa. A number of interventions have been identified as being promising for improving access to education girls and they are viz;

 

LOWERING DIRECT COST

Many governments have taken this as the best factor that will help girls to enrol in the schools more especially the public ones. Most have taken the measures to cut some of the direct cost by waiving fees present economic situation in Nigeria.

This is because many parents are finding it extremely difficult to meet the financial requirement of sending the girls to the schools.

 

EXPANDING THE NUMBER OF SCHOOL PLACES AND SINGLE-SEX SCHOOLS

Yet supplying adequate school places is not sufficient condition. If the demand for girl’s education is low because of other constraints strategies to expand schools and make more places can include community involvement in building and maintaining schools as it happens in other countries. Encouragement of the communities towards maintaining the school’s form of construction to staff recruitment.

 

SPECIAL RESOURCES ALLOCATION

A special resource allocation directly from the budget can make girls education more accessible and affordable. Policymakers and planners of education at the central and state level must be sensitized on the value of girl child education.

 

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

The success of social mobilization is very essential in improving girl child is very paramount. Government alone cannot do it alone, so there is a need for the community and the private sector to help towards maintaining the cores.

A process of social change including community involvement and mobilization in favour of girl child education is needed to sustain participation adjustments within gender relationships and behaviour of girls and boys are fundamental to achieving the changes in education.

Moreover, professional groups have a good task in this part as to mobilizing support through advocacy.  Advocacy should be carried out for support from non-traditional sources that is the private sector.
