Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action – Kano Office join other international bodies to celebrate international day in support of torture victims which is marked annually.
The celebration started on the 22nd of June, 2020, with an online sensitisation campaign on the need of why victims of torture and their family’s needs support; be it psychotherapy, legal and social support and torture victims need to speak out to get the required help needed.
Flyers and banners was developed on what torture is, and what the Nigerian Anti-Torture Act 2017 says about Torture.
Section 2 of the Act defines torture as an act by which pain or suffering whether physical or mental is intentionally inflicted on a person to either obtain information or confession from him or a third party.
Section 3 of the Nigerian Anti torture Act provides there is no justification for torture.
Section 5 also provides victims or their families the right to complain.
Section 8 Criminalised torture and anybody who participates or present during the commission of the act of torture is liable as the principal.
Section 9(1) provides a person who commits or contravenes section 2 is liable to conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 25years.
The head of PRAWA – Kano, Katumi Oboirien Urges the government to develop a case management system ofy data accounting for numbers of torture victims within police detention and other law enforcement facilities in Nigerian and there should put in place preventive measures to stop torture in Nigerian.
