Former Kano state Governor Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi will clock 10 years on Saturday April 4 ,2020 since his demise.
The death of Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi, the first civilian governor of old Kano state has taken Nigerians by surprise considering the circumstances that led to his death on 4th April 2010.
While coming back from the installation ceremony of the Emir of Dass in Bauchi state, Usman Bilyaminu Usman, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi gave up the ghost when they were attacked close to Kano, that frightened the late political sage and died after the encounter.
Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi became the first civilian governor of old Kano state on 1st October 1979 after the lift of ban on politics in 1978 by the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo .
His reign as Governor of Kano state saw the development of the state in the areas of social amenities , infrastructure and human development.
Though, he rode to power under the popular opposition party,The Peoples Redemption party (PRP) in Old Kano and Kaduna states ,now 4 states , but late Abubakar Rimi was popular with the masses as a result of his people oriented policies and human development.
Some pundits described Late Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi as a firebrand politician ,some of the policies he enunciated as Governor of Kano state was copied by the federal government of Nigeria.
The first governor in Nigeria to introduce May Day celebrations to commemorate workers effort in bringing development to the people.
Knowing the importance of Media made Late Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi to establish the first television station for the state, CTV 67 now Abubakar Rimi Television, the TV station started transmission at Kano state Government House inside a building called Nasser House before the completion of the stations permanent site in Hotoro area of Kano metropolis.
He also established The Triumph newspapers and named Gidan SAADU ZUNGUR ,the newspaper produce future veteran journalists for Nigeria, some have long established their own media houses and are providing employment opportunities to many people.
Late Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi was jailed during the regime of Late General Sani Abacha with other prominent politicians like Alhaji Sule Lamido, his political disciple.
Rimi was at the forefront in the formation of Peoples Democratic party in 1998 where the party recorded success at the February 27 polls.
He was about to contest the presidency in 1999 when he was prevented by some powerful interests who want the power to shift to the southwest and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo emerged in 1999.
Late Muhammad Abubakar Rimi is not afraid to voice out his mind whenever there is need to do so .
