Northern Nigeria is set to come alive as preparations intensify for the maiden edition of the Arewa Festival, slated for November 22nd and 23rd across all 19 northern states. The festival is being organised to commemorate the 2025 Global Entrepreneurship Week and aims to spotlight the region’s entrepreneurial potential, cultural wealth, and creative energy.

According to the convener and organiser, Hajiya Shuhda Muhammed, the event is open to women entrepreneurs, SMEs, vendors, artisans, food exhibitors, creatives, cultural troupes, content creators, and members of the general public interested in trade, culture, and networking.

She said the festival will showcase a wide range of activities, including trade and product exhibitions, an African food and cultural exchange fair, a fashion and craft display, panel discussions featuring local and international experts, networking sessions for entrepreneurs, and vibrant cultural and entertainment performances.

Hajiya Shuhda noted that Africa has for centuries been a global centre of commerce, with northern Nigeria playing a defining role. Despite this legacy, she lamented that the region is still often misrepresented as economically stagnant.

She raised a key question: “Why does poverty persist in northern Nigeria despite its deep-rooted entrepreneurial history?” According to her, the festival serves as a call to revive the region’s commercial spirit and empower its people to reclaim their place in the global economic space.

“Let us awaken our collective potential and prove that our traditions and trade can coexist. There is a lot of untold history about the depth of entrepreneurship in Northern Nigeria, but unfortunately, these stories are not widely known,” she said.

She further explained that the acronym AREWA stands for Africa Rebuilding Economy With Agriculture, an initiative that seeks to drive growth in trade, entrepreneurship, education, the creative industry, and hospitality.
