Kano Central Senatorial District is the largest Senatorial District in Nigeria which comprises 15 local governments. Since Nigeria’s return to democracy on May 29, 1999, Kano Central has churned out different senators in each democratic circle. None of the Senators has ever been re-elected. From Late Alh Kura Muhammed, Senators Rufai Hanga, Muhammad Bello, Bashir Garba Lado, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the incumbent Senator Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.

So what could be the problem and who will the cap fit as we approach the 2023 elections. Is it inaction, Higher ambition, or strong opposition? The available record shows that in terms of bringing infrastructural development Senator Garba Lado is an exception. There was high hope on Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and Senator Shekarau but it seems that none of them could optimally perform.

As 2023 approaches, Kano Central needs to make a choice between the old brigades or the youth? Between record of performance or failure? Between service delivery to the grassroots or handing out peanuts?

The Kano Central Senatorial District needs to elect someone who is vibrant, energetic, vocal as well as a grassroots mobilizer. Kano Senatorial District needs someone who will stand on the floor of the National Assembly to sponsor bills on girl child education, youth unemployment, health, and so on. We need someone who is less than 40 years old, who is from a humble background, who has an entrepreneurial mind to help our youth to be self-reliant.

That Person that Kano Central needs to elect is no other person than Hon Engr. Dr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat, the current Chairman of Ungogo Local Government area. He was the Managing Director of Kano Metropolitan Agency before his election to the office of Chairman. He was born in the late 80s in Kano, did his Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Kano Before Preceding to Dawakin Tofa Science College where he graduated among the top of the class. He was at Bayero University Kano to study for a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He also holds a Master’s degree in Telecommunications from Jodhpur University in India. He is a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, an Ambassador of Peace all at a very young age.

‘Ramat’ as he is popularly known is a hardworking person that is highly innovative. In his role as the Chairman of Ungogo local government, he pioneered the digitization of Resident ID cards for the residents of the local government through the Ungogo Identity Management Commission. This has aided security agents to have a comprehensive database of the local government populace. This can be attested with the relative peace enjoyed in Ungogo.

Within a year he has renovated and constructed many schools, built roads and primary health care centers, paid NECO registration fees to indigent students, dug many boreholes, provided employment, assisted security agencies with patrol vehicles and so many that can’t be mentioned. Recently over a billion naira worth of projects were commissioned by him.

It’s on this note that the Ungogo local government people should allow this young man to serve Kano central and Nigeria at large. We need someone of his caliber and principle to help replicate such projects within the 15 local governments of Kano Central. 2023 elections will be a game-changer as we are set to elect the youngest vibrant senator from Kano State and probably Nigeria. Let me conclude with a quote from Saul Williams who says that ‘ the most powerful political voices are those with a different way of seeing and processing the world and sounds that emanate from it’
