Dantata Foods and Allied Products has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)with the Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA), Bayero University Kano, to reinvigorate dryland agriculture in the country.
Tajuddeen Dantata, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company, stated this at the signing ceremony of the MoU, on Friday in Kano.
Dantata said the agreement would encouraged production of drought resistant seeds for farmers experiencing climatic challenges and harsh weather condition.
He said: “With the collaboration; we will conduct research on crops and pass the information to the farmers, thus, promoting scientific applications in farming.
“About 100, 000 farmers are expected to benefit from the studies, aimed at enhancing effective utilisation of agriculture and water resources.
“The growing population coupled with increasing need for shelter, exposed farmers to difficulties in accessing arable lands.
“Through the partnership, we will ensure quality assurance in production of inputs and other products in accordance with international best standard.
“There are certain parameters of some products that are in control, which you will not be able to export to Europe and other Western countries,” he said.
Dantata added that the company would work tireleesly toward realising the goals of the agreement, to fast track production of quality products for export.
Also speaking, Prof. Yahuza Bello, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, described the MoU as a game changer towards facilitating application of modern farming techniques in the country.
Bello noted that the centre was established to accelerate sustainable transformation of agricultural technologies to boost crops and livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa.
He said that the centre was also designed to enhance human capacity development to meet the demand for improved technologies needed to adapt to the changing environment.
“The Centre; as part of its objectives, will support graduates who will be able to engage themselves in production and research on dryland agriculture, to provide relevant and appropriate solutions to the regional agriculture and development problems,” he said.
