<p>The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has convened a joint strategic meeting with the Ministry of Education and all secondary school principals in the state to address the growing concerns of fake news fabrication, cybercrime, cultism, and other threats to school safety. The meeting was chaired by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, alongside the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh.</p>
<p>Speaking at the meeting, CP Baba Mohammed Azare expressed deep concern over recent incidents where students deliberately generated and circulated fake security alerts, edited videos, false allegations, and misleading social media posts. He described such acts as criminal, stressing that the fabrication or spread of false information is punishable under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act.</p>
<p>The Commissioner of Police further disclosed that the Command has observed increasing involvement of students in cyber-related offenses such as impersonation, internet fraud, online bullying, and scam activities. According to him, other disturbing trends include cultism, drug abuse, bullying, gangsterism, and sexual misconduct within some schools.</p>

<p>CP Azare assured the Ministry of Education and school principals that the Police Command will intensify patrols around schools, deploy more school safety officers, strengthen intelligence gathering, and ensure prompt intervention in reported cases. He warned that any student caught fabricating or spreading harmful falsehoods, engaging in cultism, bullying, drug abuse, or cybercrime will face appropriate legal action.</p>
<p>Issuing directives to principals, CP Azare mandated schools to conduct mandatory sensitization on fake news, cyber responsibility, and digital safety. He also instructed schools to report all security-related incidents immediately to both the Police Command and the Ministry of Education, strengthen internal monitoring teams, reinforce supervision of students’ access to mobile phones, and identify at-risk students for early intervention with parents, counselors, and security agencies.</p>

<p>In his remarks, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring safe and conducive learning environments across Akwa Ibom State. He emphasized that the Ministry will continue to enforce compliance with school policies, strengthen administrative oversight, and partner with the Police in rolling out statewide awareness programmes.</p>
<p>Also speaking at the meeting, the Principal of Mary Hanney Secondary School, Oron, Mrs. Emma Ubongabasi James, clarified that there was no kidnap incident in her school last week. She explained that the viral hoax was a social media stunt orchestrated by a 15-year-old student seeking attention.</p>
<p>Concluding the meeting, CP Baba Mohammed Azare reiterated that Akwa Ibom State remains one of the safest states in Nigeria. He assured that the Police Command will continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and all stakeholders to sustain a secure and digitally responsible school environment.</p>
