<p>ASUU has released a progress report on the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, highlighting new commitments on university autonomy, funding, governance, salaries and staff welfare.</p>
<p>The union said both sides agreed to uphold full autonomy, enforce existing laws on Governing Councils, ensure merit-based vice-chancellor appointments and allow internal elections for departmental and faculty leadership.</p>
<p>A needs-based budgeting model was adopted to strengthen funding, with renewed support for research, protection of university lands and new tax options to boost education financing.</p>

<p>In a newsletter released by the union as signed by the President, Christopher Piwuna, statutory bodies will retain legal compositions, pre-degree programmes will be limited to science fields, and promotions will now be based on research output. Universities also secured duty-free importation of academic materials.</p>

<p>An implementation committee and NUC monitoring unit will oversee rollout, with reviews set every three years. ASUU accepted a revised salary structure close to the Nimi Briggs proposal, while earned allowances will be paid annually at 12% of each university’s wage bill. A non-victimisation clause was also agreed.</p>
