By Abbas Yushau Yusuf

Farm Radio International has launched Just Communication, an initiative to empower African journalists.

During the launch, Head of Development Communication at FRI, Benjamin Fiafi, said the initiative is a very important moment for Farm Radio International. He described it as a means for African media to communicate, amplify issues, and provide farmers with the information they need, noting that without communication no system can grow.

Benjamin noted that at the heart of every development there must be information and emphasized that investment in communication is very negligible, so the media should amplify underrepresented voices.

According to him, Just Communication is Africa’s biggest collaborative development that unites broadcasters, journalists, and digital media for development, noting that wherever you are, you receive information and share it for overall development.

Benjamin pointed out that the vision for Farm Radio International’s Just Communication is simple and profound, starting from farmers to policymakers, so that access to communication will be easier and media will serve as a bridge, not a barrier.

The Head of Development Communication asserted that communication is not a luxury but a necessity, where the project for Just Communication connects professionals to amplify local stories.

On her part, Madam Busi Ngcebetsha said that for Just Communication to materialize, there will be capacity building and collaboration for development impact. She said the aim of JC is to reach marginalized communities through the media, noting that Just Communication is a growing Africa-led movement for sustainable development, and urged partners not to just observe the future of African development but to shape it.

On his part, the Executive Director of the Centre for Media and Society, Dr. Akin Akimgbu, said Just Communication, which is a continental engagement, comes with big advantages like policy harmonization and political leverage in terms of voice amplification.

Delivering his goodwill message, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Alhasan Yahaya, congratulated Farm Radio International for coming up with the initiative, noting that for decades Farm Radio has recorded remarkable success and urged them to continue.

Comrade Yahaya said Just Communication opens opportunities for capacity building.

Nigeria Tracker Communications is part of the partners, and its editor, Abbas Yushau Yusuf, joined the meeting.
