As the most populous state with close to a million out-of-school children in the recent UNICEF report, coupled with inadequate professional teachers, poor implementation of policies, and political interference at all levels.

Education in Kano State succumbed to a period of decapitation, negligence of teachers’ welfare, infrastructure, teaching and learning materials deficit, outdated policies, among others.

Available evidence indicates that previous administrations from 1999 to date have done so much to improve the standard of education in the state.

Between 2003 and 2011, more teachers were recruited both at basic and post-basic education levels, which was the first of its kind in the history of education in Kano State. The Science and Technical Schools Board received the much-desired attention during Malam Ibrahim Shekarau’s administration, which reshaped and redesigned the Kano science and technical schools initiated by Audu Bako. Shekarau’s administration also initiated the rural allowance for teachers as an incentive to encourage them to work in rural areas.

More schools and classrooms were created by Ganduje’s administration.

Presently, the Kano State government under Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has injected billions of naira into the education sector to ensure its recovery reform agenda.
The declaration of a state of emergency in July 2024 is a testament to the present administration’s commitment to improving the standard of education in Kano State.
Within the declaration period, more schools were created with furniture and other teaching materials.

Recently, 4,315 teachers were recruited by the state government, in addition to the earlier recruitment of 5,634 in 2024, and 400 mathematics teachers were added to the existing ones in senior secondary schools.

As part of its commitment to policy implementation, the present administration has recruited 1,600 security personnel to safeguard schools and make the learning environment safer.

The reform prospect of the present administration has been recognized with the budgetary allocation of 31% in 2024 and 30% of more than 400 billion in 2025.

Kano’s vision for education is attainable, and reforming the sector is a giant stride toward a prosperous standard in education.
