<p>Nigeria&#8217;s former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the incarceration of the post graduate student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Isah Mokwa, who usually expresses his opinion on governor Bago&#8217;s style of governance in Niger State.</p>
<p>Mokwa, who is known for his frequent online criticism of the Bago administration and for referring to the governor as “Governor Amunike”, was, on the 22nd of October, 2025, arrested from his home in Lapai and taken to the State Police Command Headquarters in Minna.</p>
<p>The appellation, &#8220;Governor Amunike&#8221;, Nigerian Tracker News has learnt, is a mocking nickname that some social media users apply to certain governors or politicians to ridicule them as clueless, boastful, or underperforming.</p>

<p>&#8220;This development is both outrageous and unacceptable. It is a dangerous sign of how far our country has descended into intolerance and repression, where citizens’ rights are trampled and dissenting voices are silenced under the guise of enforcing the so-called Cybercrimes Act&#8221;, he posted.</p>
<p>He also stressed that the case which is a civil matter, should by all means not be criminalized for political witch-hunts.</p>
<p>&#8220;Let it be clear: defamation is a civil matter, not a criminal offence. To weaponise it for political witch-hunts is a betrayal of justice and a grave assault on democracy itself. The ruling party’s misuse of state power to intimidate citizens, journalists, and the opposition through arbitrary arrests has become a shameful routine that must stop.&#8221;</p>
<p>On that account, the former vice president called for an immediate repeal or amendment of the Cybercrime Act; citing that many are leveraging on it to suppress truth.</p>
<p>&#8220;I therefore call for the immediate repeal or comprehensive amendment of the Cybercrimes Act, which has become a convenient tool for gagging citizens and waging war against democracy, freedom, and dissent.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nigerian Tracker News had reported that the Niger State governor, Umar Bago, gave an order that the Mokwa should be charged with terrorism, cybercrime and thuggery.</p>
