The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil chapter, has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the university administration, citing insubordination, lack of transparency, and poor accountability. This position was made public following the union’s congress meetings held on October 2 and October 23, 2025.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson, Dr. Aliyu Yusuf Ahmad, and the Secretary, Dr. Abubakar Ibrahim Tukur, the congress expressed deep concern over the administration’s failure to improve the working and living conditions of both staff and students. “Effective research, teaching, and learning cannot thrive under the current conditions,” the union stated, emphasizing the urgent need for infrastructural and welfare upgrades.

The union also condemned the administration’s refusal to release the audited accounts for the years 2023 and 2024, as well as the budget performance reports covering 20 quarters from January 2020 to December 2024. According to ASUU-KUST, this omission constitutes a direct violation of Statute 5 of the KUST (Amendment Law) 2017. “The lack of financial transparency is alarming,” the statement read, further demanding clarification on questionable expenditures reported in the first and second quarters of 2025.

Another major grievance raised by the congress was the university’s failure to recruit adequate academic staff, particularly in newly established departments. The union criticized the administration for placing qualified personnel on contract appointments instead of offering them permanent positions. “This undermines job security and institutional stability,” Dr. Ahmad noted.

ASUU-KUST also highlighted the persistent issue of irregular electricity supply across various sections of the university. The union called for immediate reconnection to the national grid to ensure a conducive environment for academic activities. “Basic utilities like electricity are non-negotiable for any serious academic institution,” Dr. Tukur added.

Furthermore, the congress demanded the prompt settlement of outstanding entitlements owed to its members. The union described the delay as unjust and detrimental to staff morale. “Our members deserve to be treated with dignity and fairness,” the statement emphasized.

In light of these unresolved issues, ASUU-KUST appealed to stakeholders and well-meaning citizens of Kano State to intervene and urge the Vice-Chancellor to address the concerns with urgency and patriotism. “We call for strict adherence to the university’s enabling laws to prevent industrial disharmony,” the union warned.

The statement concluded with a powerful reminder: “Justice is a universal language; respect for it is a panacea for peace.”
