<p>The presidency has released another updated prerogative of mercy list, commuting Maryam Sanda’s death sentence to 12 years imprisonment.</p>
<p>Earlier on Wednesday, the presidency, in statement by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, released the list of those who benefited from President Bola Tinubu’s clemency without Ms Sanda’s name.</p>
<p>But shortly afterwards, Mr Onanuga released more lists, showing Ms Sanda’s death sentence being commuted to 12 years imprisonment.</p><div class="YyGrNbKu" style="clear:both;float:left;width:100%;margin:0 0 20px 0;"><script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

<p>The presidency said the reduction of the sentence was “in the best interest of the children and good conduct” as she embraced new lifestyle, became “a model prisoner” and showed remorse for her action.</p>

<p>Recall that the President had earlier issued the instruments granting pardon, clemency, and reduced sentences to some offenders.</p>
<p>Following consultations with the Council of State, the President received concerns on the recommended list and consequently initiated a due process review.</p>
<p>The Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, in a statement on Wednesday, said the exercise has been completed and approved by the president.</p>
<p>“This exercise is to ensure that only persons who met stipulated legal and procedural requirements would benefit from the prerogative of mercy.</p>
<p>“During this final review, few persons earlier recommended were found not to have met the necessary requirements and were accordingly delisted.</p>
<p>&#8220;While in some other cases, sentences were reviewed and reduced to reflect fairness, justice, and the spirit of the exercise.</p>
<p>“This exercise underscores the President’s desire to balance justice with compassion and the belief that justice must not only punish, but also reform and redeem,’’ he added.</p>
<p>He said that the review was undertaken with meticulous commitment to due process to reinforce the administration’s broader commitment to justice reform and humane correctional practices in line with international standards.</p>
