<p>Professor Sheikh Umar Sani Fagge, a distinguished Nigerian scholar and senior professor of Arabic and at Bayero University Kano (BUK), received international acclaim at the 11th International Arabic Language Conference in Dubai after presenting one of the most celebrated papers of the event, a study that blended classical Arabic linguistics with profound literary and spiritual insights.</p>

<p>Professor Fagge’s paper, titled “Clothing Grammatical Terminology in the Garment of Literary Expression”, and examined how Arab poets historically transformed rigid grammatical terms into vibrant literary devices that stir emotion and imagination. The research demonstrated how technical elements such as:<br />
• Kana and its sisters,<br />
• Inna and its sisters,<br />
• nominative sentence structures,<br />
• imperative and warning constructs,<br />
• particles of jarr and jazm,<br />
• and prosodic/poetic terminology,</p>

<p>Fagge emphasized that the genius of Arab poets lies in their ability to turn abstract grammatical ideas into vivid sensory images, echoing the famous line by Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti:</p>
<p>“The heart of a poet is a mirror in which all things are reflected, small and great, delicate and majestic.”</p>

<p>A pivotal section of Fagge’s presentation explored the profound depth of the Arabic conjunction “Ù” (wa) — commonly translated as “and” but capable of conveying far richer meanings.</p>

<p>“When we say: Musa wa Isa wa Muhammad (peace be upon them), the conjunction ‘wa’ does not merely indicate addition. It reflects continuity, unity, and an unbroken chain of divine messengership.”</p>
<p>He noted that the conjunction can signify:<br />
• accompaniment (“with”),<br />
• simultaneity (“while”),<br />
• stylistic elevation,<br />
• rhetorical emphasis,<br />
• and spiritual linkage — especially in Qur’anic contexts.</p>
<p>Scholars at the event praised this multi-layered interpretation as “a rare fusion of linguistic precision and theological depth.”</p>

<p>At the conclusion of his session, Professor Fagge was honored by the International Council for the Arabic Language, receiving an official Certificate of Participation and Appreciation for his scholarly contribution.</p>
