The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, and several other senior officials over what it described as gross misconduct and violations of the party’s constitution.

In a statement issued after an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the party announced that the decision followed a thorough investigation into allegations of financial impropriety, abuse of office, and activities considered detrimental to the unity and image of the SDP.

According to the communiqué, the expelled members were found guilty of engaging in anti-party activities, including unauthorised meetings, public statements that undermined the party’s leadership, and attempts to destabilise its internal structures.

“The move followed the adoption of the report of the Disciplinary Committee and a subsequent White Paper which reviewed the findings and recommendations on the allegations brought against the affected officers,” said the National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba.

Aiyenigba disclosed that the expelled members were apprehended by security operatives while allegedly in possession of sensitive documents and valuables removed from the secretariat, and are currently facing criminal prosecution.

He stated that the disciplinary measures were necessary to restore order and reinforce the principles of transparency, accountability, and loyalty that the party stands for.

“The SDP will not tolerate any behaviour that threatens its integrity or unity. The party remains committed to internal democracy and will continue to take decisive action against any member who violates its rules,” the statement read in part.

The party also announced that interim officials would be appointed to fill the affected positions pending a national convention, where new leaders will be duly elected.

Political observers say the move reflects ongoing internal power struggles within the SDP as it positions itself ahead of the next general elections.

The expelled Alhaji Shehu Gabam, the Nigerian Tracker News learnt was first appointed as the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nigeria in March 2022.

However, in June, 2025, following internal party disputes and a court order, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) announced his suspension alongside the the National Auditor, Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, the National Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna, from the party. This was a highly controversial move, with Gabam and his faction disputing its legitimacy.
