In anticipation of a nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has issued a public advisory declaring all correctional centres across the country as “Red Zones.” The protest, which is being organized to demand the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has prompted heightened security measures around prison facilities.

According to a press release signed by Umar Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, the designation of correctional centres as Red Zones means that these facilities are now considered highly restricted areas. “Anyone who has no official business therein should stay off to avoid any untoward incidents or security breaches,” Abubakar stated in the release dated October 19, 2025.

The NCoS emphasized that correctional centres are sensitive security installations and must be protected from unauthorized access, especially during periods of civil unrest. “Correctional centres are restricted areas,” the statement reiterated, warning that any attempt to breach these zones could result in serious consequences.

In addition to the Red Zone declaration, the Correctional Service called on all citizens to exercise caution and cooperate with security agencies. “It is equally important to respect restricted areas such as correctional facilities,” Abubakar noted, urging Nigerians to prioritize peace and safety during the protest.

The advisory comes amid growing tensions surrounding the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), whose supporters have planned demonstrations nationwide. Security agencies are expected to be on high alert to prevent disruptions and ensure public safety.

Umar Abubakar, who holds multiple professional designations including AICMC, ANIPR, and FCAI, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to maintaining order and protecting its facilities. The Nigerian Correctional Service has not disclosed any specific intelligence regarding threats to its centres but has made it clear that precautionary measures are being taken seriously.
