The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has raised alarm over what it describes as the unlawful arrest and continued detention of Zakariyya Kabeer Gwagwarwa, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member from Kano State currently serving in Katsina State.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Y.Z. Ya’u, CITAD condemned the arrest and called for his immediate release.

According to YZ Yau, Mr. Gwagwarwa was reportedly detained by the Katsina State Police Command following a directive from a member of the House of Representatives representing Nassarawa Federal Constituency in Kano State. The organization stated that the arrest stemmed from a Facebook post by Zakariyya which read: “Company Pampers must go Sabuwar Nassarawa 2027 Insha Allahu.” CITAD emphasized that the post did not incite violence or threaten public order, but rather reflected his constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression.

The statement further revealed that Zakariyya was held incommunicado for several days before being arraigned in court. CITAD expressed concern that instead of granting him bail, the court adjourned the case for two weeks, thereby prolonging what it termed an unlawful detention. “This is a clear violation of his rights,” the organization asserted.

CITAD also cited disturbing reports of mistreatment during Zakariyya’s detention, including allegations of physical assault by police officers. “Such actions are not only illegal but morally reprehensible,” the statement read, urging authorities to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.

The organization drew parallels between Zakariyya’s case and the recent death of a young Imam from Dorayi who allegedly died in police custody. CITAD warned that police detention should never become a site of torture or extrajudicial punishment, especially for individuals who have not been convicted by any court of law.

In its concluding remarks, CITAD demanded the unconditional release of Zakariyya Kabeer Gwagwarwa and called on the judiciary to uphold justice and resist political interference. “The police must serve the people, not political interests,” Ya’u stated, urging law enforcement agencies to respect their constitutional mandate.

CITAD reiterated that democracy in Nigeria can only flourish when citizens’ rights are protected and the rule of law is maintained. “Silencing citizens for expressing their views is a dangerous descent into authoritarianism,” the statement warned.
