In a bid to combat the growing spread of misinformation on social media, Alkalanci, a Hausa-language fact-checking platform, has organized a two-day capacity-building workshop for Islamic scholars and Imams in Kano. The initiative aims to equip religious leaders with tools to identify and counter false narratives, especially those that threaten communal peace and trust.

Declaring the workshop open, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, Chairman of the Kano Council of Ulama, emphasized the moral responsibility of religious leaders to uphold truth in their sermons and teachings. “Millions of people listen to you. Whatever you tell them carries weight,” he said. Sheikh Khalil stressed that lying is condemned in Islam and urged scholars to protect their communities by verifying information before dissemination.

Representing His Highness the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II,represented by Bauren Kano Alhaji Abbas Dalhatu who is the Managing Director of Freedom Radio Group, highlighted the pervasive influence of social media. “Freedom Radio reaches over 230 million people. The impact of fake news is delicate and dangerous,” Dalhatu noted. He cited a Quranic reference from Surah An-Naml, where Prophet Suleiman instructed his servant and a bird to verify the story of Queen Bilqis, underscoring the Islamic precedent for fact-checking.

Alkalanci’s founder, Alhasan Bala, expressed gratitude to the attendees and supporters of the initiative. “We live in a time where information travels faster than ever. A single message, video, or image can reach thousands in seconds, and much of it is inaccurate,” Bala warned. He described misinformation as a direct threat to peace, unity, and trust, especially in religious communities.

Bala explained that the workshop was tailored for Islamic scholars because of their central role in society. “Your voices are voices of guidance and authority. With such trust comes the profound responsibility to ensure that what you share is true, informed, and beneficial,” he said. He added that Alkalanci, founded in October last year, has remained committed to promoting media literacy and countering disinformation in the Hausa-speaking regions.

Participants were introduced to practical tools and methods for verifying content, whether on social media or within their communities. Bala concluded by thanking the Emir’s representatives, the Council of Ulama, and all facilitators for endorsing and supporting the initiative. “Even respected leaders can unintentionally pass false information. This is not weakness it reflects how deeply misinformation has penetrated our society,” he remarked.
