A coalition of civil society organisations under the banner of the Forum of Kano Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption staged a powerful protest and solidarity walk in Kano on Thursday, demanding justice and transparency over an alleged â¦6.5 billion fraud involving the Director General of Protocol to the Kano State Government, Abdullahi Rogo.

The protest, which drew dozens of activists and concerned citizens, was a direct response to recent revelations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Investigators allege that Rogo masterminded the diversion of public funds through a network of bureau de change operators and shell companies. Though â¦1.2 billion has reportedly been recovered, civil society leaders say the damage runs deeper.

“We stand united because corruption is killing Kano. Public trust has been betrayed, billions have been siphoned, and the people continue to suffer while a few individuals enrich themselves,” said Comrade Abdullahi Muhammad, a leading voice in the protest.

The protestors highlighted a series of alleged financial scandals that have plagued the Kano State Government in recent years:

– Diversion of Federal Palliatives: Relief items including rice and fertilizer meant for vulnerable citizens were reportedly found in private warehouses linked to top officials.
– Novomed Drug Scandal: A multi-billion-naira contract for drug supplies to 38 LGAs was allegedly paid in full, yet no drugs were delivered.
– ACRISAL Contract Fraud: Inflated agricultural project contracts worth hundreds of millions remain unaccounted for.
– Women’s Cash Support Scheme: â¦50,000 grants meant for rural women were allegedly diverted, leaving many beneficiaries excluded.
– Metropolitan Road Projects: Contracts worth â¦4 billion were advertised as full reconstructions but delivered as substandard overlays.
– Food Aid Diversion: Federal food relief was reportedly rebranded and sold from private warehouses, including one linked to a top aide.

;

The CSOs issued a six-point demand to authorities:

1. Full support for EFCC and ICPC to pursue investigations without political interference.
2. Immediate recovery and transparent use of looted funds.
3. A probe by the Kano State House of Assembly into all listed scandals.
4. Judicial impartiality in corruption-related cases.
5. An end to the harassment of journalists and activists.
6. A call to citizens to unite beyond party lines in the fight against corruption.

;

The Kano State Government has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated and “fictitious”. Officials argue that all financial transactions are properly budgeted and accounted for, and that the Directorate of Protocol operates within legal boundaries. However, ICPC documents and witness testimonies suggest otherwise, with reports of cash payments and laundering through currency markets.
