Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held in Kano, the Governor represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim emphasized the importance of mobilizing citizens to participate actively in the exercise. “Voter registration is more than a civic duty; it is a compulsory responsibility,” Ibrahim stated, adding that the initiative is crucial for shaping the future of Kano and Nigeria at large.

According to Ibrahim, the taskforce will be chaired by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Commissioner for Information, and supported by 36 dedicated members drawn from various sectors.

These include representatives from the Office of the Deputy Governor, Special Advisers to the Governor, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, and the Special Adviser on Information.

The committee also includes a broad spectrum of stakeholders such as the representative of His Highness Danmalikin Kano, Alhaji Auwalu Mudi Yakasai, religious leaders (Ulama), business moguls, members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the State Youth Council. “This is an all-inclusive committee, even opposition parties are represented,” Ibrahim noted.

Highlighting the urgency of the task, Ibrahim pointed out that Kano currently has about five million registered voters. “We expect to double that figure to ten million. This is not just a number it is a reflection of our commitment to democratic participation,” he said. He urged the taskforce to ensure fairness, transparency, and inclusivity throughout the registration process.

The Governor’s representative further charged the committee to liaise closely with INEC to ensure that adequate facilities are provided and that no eligible citizen is denied the opportunity to register. “You must not limit yourselves to the basics. Embark on rigorous public enlightenment campaigns across all 44 local government areas,” he advised.

Ibrahim also stressed the need to address voter apathy and ensure that newly created polling units receive adequate attention. “Accurate data collection is essential. Registering is one thing, but ensuring that registrants collect their voter cards is another critical step,” he added.

In his remarks, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the chairman of the taskforce, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. “We consider this assignment a call to service. We assure His Excellency of our full commitment and, Insha Allah, we will not disappoint him,” Waiya declared.

He noted that the committee comprises individuals with influence and reach across local governments and traditional institutions, positioning them well to mobilize citizens effectively. “We have everyone we need from grassroots leaders to chieftaincy representatives lto make this campaign a success,” Waiya affirmed.

With the voter registration exercise underway, Kano State’s bold target of 10 million voters signals a renewed commitment to democratic engagement and civic responsibility.

We will ensure that people register and use their PVCs since Kano is the pacesetter in Nigerian politics.
