<p>The late Emir of Zuru His Royal Highness (Brigadier-General rtd) Sani Sami will be fondly remembered in Bauchi State for his two eventful and exciting years as military Governor from 1983-85.</p>
<p>I was barely 23 years old (1983), 42 years ago to be precise, when the no-nonsense colonel assumed duty as military Governor after the overthrow of Shagari&#8217;s civilian administration. I am sure I will be speaking the minds of my friends and age mate that it was a period when we were yet to fully grasp the happenings around us, although we were a bit conscious of what was going on. For example, in 1983 we jubilated when we heard the voice of Brigadier Sani Abacha when he announced the overthrow of the civilian administration and the subsequent emergence of Major general Muhammadu Buhari as military Head of State. Abacha told the nation that the change of government had became necessary in view of the intolerable situation of corruption and decay in public infrastructure resulting in &#8216;hospitals becoming a mere consulting clinics&#8230;&#8217; among others.</p>

<p>Colonel Sani Sami came to Bauchi State as military Governor and he came with the full force of military rule which is characterized by the no-nonsense approach to governance and the usual display of immediate action and discipline. Sani Sami took personal initiative to go around offices as early as Seven O&#8217;clock in the morning to catch late coming workers by ensuring that all gates to the offices were locked immediately after his arrival. Erring civil servants especially those with corrupt allegations were summarily dismissed or demoted and the general public were made to feel the impact of the military on matters involving acts and behaviour that are considered as acts of indiscipline. There was general fear and apprehension among citizens and everyone was afraid to break the law.</p>
<p>But Sani Sami was also humane enough and sociable such that by the time he left Bauchi State in 1985, he was able to make friends and admirers who up to the time of his death were able to maintain the contact and ties with him as Emir of Zuru.</p>
