In a dramatic political development, former Senator Dino Melaye has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he described as the party’s diminishing ability to provide credible leadership and rescue Nigeria from its deepening political woes.

Melaye made his resignation public on Thursday, July 31, via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account. In the letter dated July 4 and addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1 in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye stated:

>;“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation”.

He further expressed that after deep reflection, he could no longer, in good conscience, participate in the party’s activities or support its agenda.

Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi State election, has not yet declared his next political affiliation. However, reports suggest he may be aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a rising opposition coalition that has recently attracted other high-profile defectors including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark.

Melaye’s departure adds to a growing wave of resignations from the PDP, as internal disputes and questions over leadership continue to plague the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. His exit is seen by analysts as a significant blow to the PDP’s influence in Kogi State and a signal of deeper fractures within the party’s national structure.

As political realignments intensify, all eyes are on Melaye’s next move. Will he officially join the ADC or chart a new course entirely? Either way, his resignation marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
