Speaking at a town hall meeting with customers from Kano East, Nura Wada Nas, Chief Regulatory Officer standing in for the Managing Director, disclosed that although the company is allocated 268 megawatts from the National Grid, it currently receives only about 180 megawatts daily.

“You can see there is a shortage of around almost 70 or 80 megawatts,” Wada Nas explained, attributing the gap to issues faced by generation companies (Gencos) and the transmission network.

“We are obligated to resolve customer complaints within 15 days,” he added, referencing regulatory frameworks enforced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). “Our goal is to make sure issues are handled before they escalate to the NERC Forum Office.”

Transformer Failures Top the Complaint List

Across Kano East, residents voiced concern over aging and faulty transformers. Masud Haruna, a customer from Unguwa Gabas, lamented that locals sometimes resort to fixing transformers themselves, highlighting the plight of the Riruwai Relief Transformer, nicknamed “sickle cell” due to its frequent breakdowns.

To combat these issues, KEDCO announced the revamping of its transformer repair workshop and pledged continued investment by Future Energy Africa, its new investors.

Exploring Alternative Power Sources

Acknowledging the instability of the national grid, Wada Nas revealed ongoing partnerships with renewable energy firms like Bagaji Renewable, which powers communities such as Zawa and Chiki with near-constant electricity.

“We’re now looking into solar and other alternatives to augment grid supply,” he said.

Rights, Responsibilities, and Regulatory Oversight

Representatives like Hajiya Fatima Tijjani Ibrahim from the Customer Relations Unit and Bashir Yahaya Saad, Regional Manager of Kano Northeast, emphasized the shared responsibilities between customers and distributors, citing the importance of following safety guidelines and honoring obligations.

“There is no business that protects the customer like electricity distribution,” said Saad, “especially with NERC in place.”
